The NHS are trying to close two very important care homes in Sheffield - Birch Avenue and Woodland View.

These homes give excellent expert care and dignity for those who have Alzheimers - many have been thrown out of homes in the private sector as they cannot or are unwilling to care for these vulnerable soles. Our relatives did not ask for or deserved Alzheimers and they have worked hard all their lives and paid all their taxes - and this is how the NHS want to treat them.

Please help and give your support and sign the online petition at http://www.gopetition.com/petition/4...ignatures.html

You don't choose to have Alzheimers - but it could easily choose you - and you won't be able to do anything about it.

Any home of this kind closing is not a very nice thing to happen, and personally I am against all closures of this kind, but you say NHS is closing them.? I thought these two homes were run by Housing Associations,

67 Birch Avenue is a one-storey purpose built home, which provides nursing care for older people with dementia. The home has four, ten bed units with an interlinking corridor surrounding a large garden and patio area. Each unit has a communal lounge and dining room. All of the forty bedrooms are single and all have en-suite facilities. A central kitchen and laundry serve the home. The home is near to the centre of Chapel town, bus routes and local amenities. A car park is available. Copies of the last Commission For Social Care inspection reports were available for service users and their families to read. The weekly fee is £460.

Thanks Mediman for the concise info provided. As I understand it the staff are leased from the NHS by the housing association. It's because the staff receive a good wage for the work they do - the words - 'you get what you pay for' come to mind - that the NHS in Sheffield say that it costs too much to look after our relatives with Alzheimers. In other words - or the interpretation would be - "they are not worth spending the money on!!!" The NHS say they can spend tax payers money in a better way? All the relatives disagree - we want our loved ones cared for by trained mental health nurses who fully understand their illness and needs and give them the dignity they deserve, who will respect them and the role they have in our families' lives. These 2 homes have been hailed nationally and internationally as centres of excellence and are used for training future nurses and give a valuable insight into this harrowing disease - which many nurses fall short by a long way. We need to move forward in the quality of care that is given to the elderly - closing these homes is a backward step. It doesn't just affect the residents of today and their families - it affects everyone in Sheffield.

thanks to the op for doing this - i take my daughter to swimming lessons at chapeltown baths and there was an elderly lady outside a couple of weeks ago saying they were closing her home and collecting signatures. She'd got about 10. It's been on my mind ever since thinking how i could help her and her fellow residents. Petitions DO work, councils have to look at decisions with something like 500 signatures and after so many the decision goes to the High Court.
