Victoria quays seems like it could have a great community but nearly all the boats parked up are owned by CV Marine and are for sale. How come? Do they rent all the spaces? It seems a massive waste.

Hi
CV Marine actually own the marina, that is they own the whole of Victoria Quays. They took over from British Waterways in 2009.
It doesn't have "residential" status, i.e. you can't live on your boat there, so we believe its being used as their showroom to sell other people's boats. (they actually don't own the boats they are selling).
It is a lovely place and a pity the space around the marina is not put to better use, there are a couple of empty units which lets it down some.

Cheers for the info, do you know why it's not got residential status? Seems a waste as they all have power points. People seem to live on the boats at the other end, not even as far as the bridge.

I think that to have residential status the insurance for the marina is a lot more than to be a "leisure" marina.
You would be basically setting up a floating village/area, I think there are also basic facilities you have to provide.
We know a few people down there and I do believe no one actually lives on their boat, there are always people down there, a lot of people visit their boats a fair bit for one thing or another.
Plus Victoria Quays is Grade 11 listed and to have a residential marine you have to have planning permission, which can take years to go through various boards!

I work on Victoria Quays at night and there are plenty of boats with smoke coming out of their chimneys at 11 o'clock at night so some people must live there!

I'm sure he does. I run through the canal basin with colleagues several times a week and see work in progress. I think there's a good mix of residential, leisure and industrial space on the first mile of the canal. At least the basin is well-maintained and makes the most of the old buildings to provide a setting for eating out. And running.

Most marinas have car parking for people who rent moorings from them, I am fairly sure that this does not apply to Victoria Quays. Even the tiny mooring site at Whaley Bridge has parking for folk who rent moorings from British Waterways.

ooohh... get off your high horse!
Maybe I do know the facts.... maybe I know for a fact that it doesn't have "residential" status and that means people aren't supposed to live there, maybe I was saying that to protect people who might live there and I might not want to get them into trouble......
But that's ok, you blurt it out to the world.... if it's true..... I'm sure you know everything there is to know about anything and have never posted when you didn't know the answer.... *yawn*....

always thought its a typical sheffield wasted opportunity, its a lovely area, yet the council have made it almost impossible to park up easily nearby, and its difficult to get directly to now without a little tour round the houses to come back round. the odd shop that was there seems to struggle (are there any left?) and there was always an underlying issue with the shops and the hotel?
could be so much better and lots more people would use it if it was just tweaked a little and made more accessible.

C.V . Marine do not own the Canal Basin, [Its proper name] We do the great British taxpayer.
It used to be a vibrant, mucky, exciting place before the big time Charley,s moved in.

He stays on a wide beam named Red Dwarf, I would have bought it had it had a cruiser stern, there's practically no outdoor space on it, it's a lovely boat other than for that.
