Santander's UK operations turned in a profit of around £1.7 billion last year. Dividends paid through the UK listings should now be subject to UK taxes as opposed to Spanish witholding tax.

Oh great. In personal experience Santander are incompetent - they have failed to credit no less than 3 credit card payments to my account, failed to send out statements, have rude, unhelpful staff in their Indian call centre with such strong accents you can't tell what they are saying, charged me for "missing payments" that THEY failed to credit to my account. But as long as the cash comes rolling in they think they can stuff their customers with this rubbish
They have taken over the administration of the Debenhams store card accounts now and it looks like I'm not the only one that has had these problems.... very dubious
