Anyone go to the Christmas lights switch-on in town tonight?
Good show, huge crowd, the kids loved it.

Yes it was cold but I think that it adds to the overall Christmas atmosphere. The light up toys were expensive but they look good and the kids love 'em.

Careful fellas, they're Festive Lights, not Christmas lights.
You show me a Christmas/Christian image on one of Sheffield's illuminations and I'll retract this statement.

There's one hanging right outside GAP. I had to look twice when I saw it!
It says Merry Christmas Sheffield, or something like that.....

the big switch on ceremony was really good, BUT, is it just me or are Sheffield lights a bit crap for a city the size or ours? The big tree outside the Town Hall could have had a little more thought put into it and the rest looked like pound shop lights!

Christmas is a Christian festival, why should they not display Christian images?
I'm not so hot on the imagery of other religious festivals, but if they can pass with no criticism from other groups, then Christmas should be the same.
Honestly, how can anyone be offended by lights, tinsel and a baby in a manger?
My housemate celebrates Eid, but he enjoys the spirit of Christmas and the decorations associated with it. He also thinks people offended by such names/images are being very petty.

Every year The General public arguesthat the lights are not sufficient enough for a City the size of Sheffield, but were not a seaside resort and don't exactly have a major tourism base, so why do they need to be any bigger etc?

I went too, and also thought that the lights were a bit small for a city this size, looked a bit pathetic after the build up and countdown.
One other critism was, that the as there was such a rush , there could have at least been two big tellys or the one that was there could have been placed higher up so that everybody could see.
We couldn't get into the Peace Gardens and couldn't see the Big telly either .... and believe me we tried.
Shame as my son was really keen to see Dick and Dom.

Well, stuck in the traffic on the bus this afternoon got plenty of time to look at the lights.....
Christmas trees at the top of Fargate are nice.

I think that most towns will want xmas lights put up and turned on at or around the same time. the contractors who supply and fit them in Shefield and many other towns probably have to install in advance so they are at least ready for the turn on date.
I thought the whole day was pretty good for nowt, the little kids got postman pat, bigger kids got Dick and Dom and the grown ups got G4 not much for the big teen kids but guess it isnt cool enough for them to be seen in town for such an event anyway.
