Bitter bite?

Pets at Home don't sell it, and I don't know which smaller pet shops would - and as I didn't want to trail all around Sheffield - thought I'd ask you lot!

I don't want to get it off the internet as I want to be able to get it asap (hopefully today)

Thanks.

It's a spray that you spray on furniture, doors etc that the teething puppy likes to chew, and the spray puts them off it so that they learn not to chew/bite/dig it.

Don't get it confused with Bitter Apple though - apparently that's pants - Bitter Bite is better!

How about rubbing a fresh chilli on?
Same reaction, cheaper & not a chemical cocktail either?

could do - but humans can't smell bitter bite, so you don't get people coming round and saying 'oooh what's that?!'

I have tried vinegar (which is gross!) but she just licked it off

You shouldn't really smell a freash chiili once the residue has dried.

The red chilli may stain fabric though, do be ware.

Another way is ditraction by using a loud noise.

We have ''the tube of doom'' that's worked on both our dogs.

It's simply a pringles tube with some gravell in.

When you catch the pup being naughty shake the tube of doom rattling the gravell on the metal base.

Dogs hate it & leg it. Soon associate it with what ever they're doing naughty.

Our German Shep even got used to me saying the words ''tube of doom'' in a certain way too

Thanks for that, we have tried noises but she gets used to them after a few times and she just ignores you! She loves the clicker for good behaviour and learns good behaviour really quickly, but is very difficult to get out of bad behaviour!

unfortunately, as she's already stolen and eaten a bar of soap, I don't think that will work! but thanks for the advice!

Horsey type places usually do something similar to stop them chewing on wooden fences. Would probably work for dogs too!

Hi Lottie

I've checked with Andy at West Street Pet Supplies and they stock Bitter Apple, which does the same as bitter bite and is suitable for most surfaces, and is £6.25 for a 8fl.oz bottle with a pump spray on top.

They're on 2700991 if you need directions or anything. Hope this helps.

Medusa beat me to it; I was going to suggest asking for "Bitter Apple", instead of "bitter bite"

It's what we used when we were training my dog.

It's good stuff.

Have you tried the training products like halti that Mudford makes.

Roger Mudford's company also makes these training ring things that make a rattling noise, which distracts the dog from bad behaviours.

hmm - thanks!

Been told Bitter Apple isn't as good, and someone has told me of another which is quite cheap so thought I'd try that first seeing as it's so cheap and worked for her, if not I'd look for Bitter Apple or Bitter Bite again.

Thanks for the info though!

I was going to get her a halti as teaching her to heel was not going well but she's now heeling with the help of a clicker!

I know you can get little attachments to leads that distract dogs from pulling so assumed you could do the same with bad behaviour.

Normally, if she starts chewing I try to keep her busy with training/playing so she's not bored, but when I'm out I need something that will taste horrid so she doens't even want to!

Thanks very much! Will bear your info in mind!

Hi Lotti,

I have nearly a fully spray bottle of bitter bite..

You are welcome to have if you want it... and obviously can try and see if it works before you go and buy some......

It is left over from when my dog was a puppy.

If its any good to you, pm me and we can arrange something.

Whilst you are out, have you triedyour dog with a Kong?

For the uninitiated, the Kong is hollow rubber toy that you fill with titbits that keeps them occupied frantically trying to get at the tasty bit in the end! The idea is its natural for an animal to have to work for its food. I used to soak dry dog food in chicken stock and stuff it with this, but add a tantalising bit of cheese in the end. Kept him occupied! As far as I remember, there is a website for Kong recipes too!!!

alysonpeach - she has got a kong but when the bits were too difficult to get out she got bored and decided to chew on something instead!

All the bits have fallen out now so I'm going to get something that fits better and show her how to use it properly... hopefully it'll work!

Thanks though!

mabsky - am about to send u a pm!

Lotti, if the bitter bite doesn't work, definately try bitter apple. It worked a treat for us with Fergus when he was younger
