I live on the road Rivelin School is on and my cat was run over yesterday.

The absolute **** who ran him over was picking their kid up from school and reversed from the top to the bottom of our cul de sac, a few hundred yards, without bothering looking behind them and hit our cat then didn't stop, just drove straight off. Fortunately one of the other parents at the school saw and followed our cat into the garden he had run into and knocked on the door of the lady who's garden he had gone into and told her what had happened.

She very kindly phoned my husband and fortunately he works near home so he managed to rush back home and take him to Hallam Vets, they've patched him up brilliantly but he had a rip 3/4 of the way around his diaphragm and his liver was in his chest cavity bleeding. If the other people hadn't let us know so quickly he would have died. The vets told us his lungs would have filled with fluid and he would have died.

What upset me most of all is that it could have been a kid that selfish person who couldn't be bothered to look where they were driving hit. Our road is a narrow residential cul de sac, heavily parked on either side with a primary school at the end so anybody who doesn't keep their wits about them when their driving away at school hometime to the point where they could hit a cat, let alone reversing for several hundred yards using their mirror is completely irresponsible and shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel of the car.

Quite a few kids from Rivelin know our cat and stop and give him tickles on the way to and from work and apparently a few kids saw what happened and were quite upset.

Anyway, sorry, rant over. I know cats are wild animals and sometimes they can get themselves into scraps and run out and get injured, but how bloody selfish not to even sodding stop and call the number on the collar? Grrr!

He is on the mend. Hallam Vets have been absolutely brilliant, I can't thank them enough. He's very sleepy after surgery but has had a little nom and is snoozing now but is shaved on his legs and his tum and has a little bandage on one leg.

Thank goodness he is okay! But it's not the first time we've had parents trom that school behave like that. There is no excuse - they know that a school full of kids are leaving at the time they pick their kids up so they should DRIVE BLOODY CAREFULLY!

Not to slate Rivelin, they're a brilliant school and an absolute pleasure to have at the end of our road, most of the kids and parents are great, but one or two... hmm

oh your poor cat - glad the vets could work their magic.

If it was me, I'd make an appoinment with the school head and let them know what happened and explain your concerns that it could easily have been a child (always grabs their attention) and get them to inform the parents.

If it's know which parent / car I'd also be asking for a contribution towards the vet fees, which I'm sure will not have been cheap.

easier said than done to be honest.... my cat is so independent when i moved house he wanted to be out the same day there was no way i could keep him in for even a week as he would av scratched my door to death!!! some cats have better road sense than others and like u say some have none. mine was a stray so he is quite clued up .... i think, but if someone did run him over (god forbid) then i would hope they would at least stop..... dont understand ur comment about everyone elses responsibility to look after them i look after my own cat i just hope someone would av the heart to let me know if they ran over him.

If they come to school everyday, you should have a word because if they are aware that the've hit your cat they should have reported it and even if they weren't they should at least help with your vet bills caused by their stupid driving. Some of these posts seem to suggest that cats should have the same sense as humans

To be honest if they'd let us know that would have been enough. If people think they'll have to pay the vets bills that would be another reason not to stop, and to be honest one I could understand for most people in the current climate. He's our cat, we'll pay the vets bills, but they could have stopped and rung us, or even asked someone else to ring. But they hit him and drove off and he would have been brown bread if the other kind people hadn't put in such an effort to let us know.

We're going to get some flowers today our neighbour who let us know.

He is getting brighter and brighter and has had a nom and even a little tickle and a purr but he's still a bit fragile.

I can't believe what a brilliant job the vets have done. My husband was certain he would die but he's on the mend. He has a check up tomorrow and hopefully it will go okay but it looks like he will be fine. No thanks to the person who didn't stop though.....

Still applys to dogs, you have to stop and report is its sort of classed as "damage to property"

I'm glad your cat is getting better, it's a horrible thing to happen but he may have not seen the cat at all? They are only very small and cars do have a considerable blind spot low down around the back unfortunately (that's why people get sensors to avoid hitting bollards etc, as you simply cannot see them in the mirrors).

Definitely a good idea to have a word with him though if poss, he may have no idea what happened and if he's made aware he might be more slow/careful in future.

Hope puss gets fully better quickly, I know I'd be going spare if one of mine was injured

Glad Hallam Vets have been able to do such a good job. They are a fantastic vets in my experience - they saved the life of my Mum and Dad's little puss and have always been good with our cat.
