Can all parents inform their children that a poor Rotherham girl was killed in a sledging accident a couple of years ago?? The poor girl and her schoolfriends were sledging on an old car bonnet down a steep field. Unfortunately they had not checked what was at the bottom of the field. <REMOVED> All children should check to see what is at the bottom of the field before sleding. Remind them to look for fencing, walls and any water - streams, rivers etc

I feel for that poor girl and her family. However I think that case specifically highlights the dangers of trespassing on a fenced off field to sledge on an old car bonnet and not checking what's at the bottom! No reason people shouldn't have fun in the snow if they're safe and use common sense! It's good advice to check for risks but let's not sensationalise it.

I have been thinking about that girl this morning!!! I bet this weather is a stark reminder for her family. Bless them, what a tragic accident. the kids/teenagers love the excitment of the snow and being off school but I agree it has to done sensibly..

Also remind them to only use proper sledges, the car bonnet picked up too much speed and the girl who was thrown off the sledge had head injuries, I believe the girl who died was also from her head injuries and the speed the 'sledge' picked up Really sad, all done silly things like that though but its only when someone dies you realise how stupid you were at the time because the thrill of it made it seem ok.

Of course.
There are tragic accidents that occur very rarely. If we all didn't go sledging because something might happen to us then there would be no fun in life.
The excitement was there for all to see yesterday when the teenagers had a day off from school and spent it sledging down a very slippery slope in Bingham Park.Life is a risk, but that is how we learn.
I remember when my son was quite small he went to the bottom park of Graves Park on a very steep slope sledging and he went very very fast and went straight in to a tree. No one could have predicted that would happen and there were many adults there. Luckily he wasn't hurt but I bet he doesn't forget that experience.

plus it was a ski slope which is designed for speed, normal fields you're not going to go that fast.

I knew this girl and was thinking of starting this thread so thanks for that.
I always think of the accident, I was a bad time for all the girls involved and also the boys who had forgotten to tell the girls to jump off.
Keep safe everyone kids and adults (we all love to play in the snow)
xx

When I was a kid we used to sledge down Charlton Brook Field and you used to have to remember to jump off the sledge before you got to the bottom as our sledges were homemade and didn't have brakes haha.
But yes kids do need telling where is safe to and ot safe to or they will just see a hill and think "wow I must go down there". Also I think kids should learn not to use just a piece of metal or plastic that they find as they can be exually as dangerous as a fence at the bottom

I know somebody who has been bragging about falling through the ice in a pond, about how cool it was and "well somebody had to check didnt they?" I don't think it was a deep pond, but its still so bloody dangerous.

It's very hard, if most parents knew the strokes that their kids pull, they would never let them out of their sight. I never did a car bonnet, but would have had I thought of it.
You are quite correct, but how to police it, god only knows. We took our lad to the ski slope with a couple of his mates, they loved it, just an idea.

My friends daughter was one of the survivors of this tragic accident and I hope nothing like it ever happens again.
