We all remember those old scare stories about silicone breast implants that could explode whilst on a plane journey due to reduced pressure in an aircraft. Of course it was a ridiculous urban myth.

Well yesterday I was flying home and found myself next to a cosmetic surgeon who had been to Naples for a conference. He told me about the rumour going round in the world of cosmetic surgeons, that there was a doctor working for the Jihadi cause doing operations to put explosive implants in female volunteers as a way of smuggling bombs on to planes.

If true, scary

He didn't know how the explosives could be detonated which might be the tricky part, but these bombs could be near undetectable. I didn't find the story implausible as drug smugglers have tried similar internal concealment and someone fanatical enough to blow themselves up on a plane would volunteer for the operation.

And aren't sniffer dogs trained to detect these things?

Maybe they're plastic explosive implants

There has to be a detonator and presumably some wiring, but I presume these can be small. I don't know enough about it, but I know somone with a metal hip joint who has to explain it every time he goes through security. I imagine metal in the breast region would arouse suspicion and that the airport security people are aware of the threat.

Whatever next? Exploding tampons? I can imagine everyone suspiciously eyeing any woman with unnatural looking large breasts as you board an aircraft.

The exploding tampons has already been done, at least the male form, see mj.scuba's links. That attack didn't work as the force of the blast was directed downwards, but a woman with explosive imports could bring down a jet by pushing her chest against the inner wall of the jet at the moment of detonation.
