Its a free service now but BT aren't making existing paying customers aware of this. So if you are paying for this service get in touch with them.

why should bt still be charging if it is now a free service ? i contacted them about a month ago about this and i was told if i had not contacted them they would just continue to charge me , what a rip off .

Apologies for thickness. So does your home phone have a display screen on it and when it rings it displays the number?

BT privacy is free, we signed up for it and got free caller ID at the same time. My cynical self says we will probably be charged for it eventually, once we've got to like it and don't want to be parted from it! They did that with 1471 (still free but you get charged now if you press 3 to call the person back rather than redialling the number yourself!) Crafty.

I've seen literally dozens of TV adverts about this over recent months. The one with Jerremy Clarkeson going on about "never a good time for sales calls". They also have newspaper adverts and billboards about it. It's in the booklet they send you with your bill too.

They are making customers aware of it. What they're not doing is automatically transfering the people who currently pay for caller display onto BT privacy.

It's up to you to check these things. The same goes for the interest your bank pays you on your savings, most won't automatically move you to the better rate. Periodically check how your gas & electricity supplier compares to the others. Ring a few places before you renew your car insurance.

BT are giving you something that used to cost money for free and people are still not happy, all you have to do is ring a freephone number!

I had the BT Preference service and caller display, and I paid for the latter. They started advertising BT Privacy, which is the new name for BT Preference, with free caller display, and I just thought that it would become free automatically.............until I received my phone bill, which showed that they were charging me for caller display for the next three months.

When I rang BT about it, I was told that, if I hadn't phoned, BT would have carried on charging me for caller display, and they had to terminate BT Preference, and restart it as BT Privacy in order for me to get free caller display, and that it would take 24 hours to activate (WHY???).

What amazed me was that with my phone bill came a leaflet explaining all about BT Privacy with free caller ID, but there was nothing in that leaflet telling existing BT Preference users and those paying for caller display that they had to contact BT to get the free option.

Bloody con
