Judiciary deciding who should be prosecuted. Judiciary meeting with witnesses to lean on them. A prosecution that says there is no case to answer and wants to drop the charges. It's all Double Dutch. A minor victory for Wilders, but has the prospect of a retrial unless they see sense and drop the case.

When the Racial Discrimination Act was amended in the mid-1990s to include racial vilification, the legislation was controversial and the government had trouble getting it through -- hence, no criminal penalties, and exemptions that you can drive a truck through.

The Act makes it unlawful for a person to "do an act" in public that is likely to "offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate another person or a group of people" on the basis of their race.

I realise that "Silver Streak" was an awful film, but to bring Wilders to trial after so long makes no sense.

So being Jewish precludes the possibility of racism does it?

It doesn't matter what race you are, you can still be a racist against other races. Witness the race riots in Birmingham between Jamaicans and Pakistanis.

And have you never heard the phase "Zionism is Racism"?

I agree, excellent news for the Dutch. It means they can criticise religion without fear of being prosecuted just because the followers of a religion are offended by the critique.

Is it any worse than some of the views expressed by muslims on these forums?

Wilders wasn't in the same boat and did not commit the same offence. There is a massive gulf between the two cases.

One was drunk when he said what he did; the other was sobre and knew exactly what he was saying.

Oh, and the latter's a well-known, vile Islamophobe too (did I mention that ?).

What exactly does that phrase mean?

Surely it is legitimate to dislike a religion and express your views, so long as you don't suggest persecuting people for their beliefs.

Isn't it?
