My Alfa 147 has developed a loud knocking noise from the engine. This noise increses with revs and I have figured that the big end has gone.

The problem is that if it's expensive to fix, I figure it would probably be as well to cut my losses and sell it for parts to a scrap yard as this has happened just as the M.O.T and Tax are about to run out.

Can anyone please suggest anywhere in Sheffield that might want to buy it, or how much an engine rebuild may cost and any recomendations who to go to. Thanks

How old is it?

How much MOT has it got left - not much but how much?

I'd be tempted to put it onto eBay as repair or spares. Is everything else OK on the car then you'd likely get more than at a scrap yard.

Just seen one on there now for £399 (with a bid).

Regarding repair, I think (not 100%) that new bearings can be done with the engine still in the car.

try www.service4service.co.uk our 02 Mondeo needed a new cylinder head (or something similar) and no-one would touch it because it is 2.5L sport and difficult to take apart. Ford wanted somwhere in the region on £2000 (yes thats right!) just for labour! But these guys have done the job and replaced cam belt etc for just under £1500 which made the car repairable! We thought we were going to have to scrap it. And whats more, they pick the car up and drop it off!

They seem to take any job on and labour rates are very reasonable. They're using genuine parts too!

It sounds too good to be true really! But we get the car back tomorrow! It might be worth you contacting them.
