Not sure how students are going to come to terms with the closure of another nightclub.
Is Counselling available?
Is anyone prepared to sponsor a student suffering withdrawl symptoms?
We must be down to only 20 nightclubs where impoverished students can pay their £10 entry fee to sup overpriced drinks and
vomit the traditional takeway across the pavement.
Of course the alternatives are not especially pleasant.A couple of
pints at the weekend - a nice meal -cinema -ohh and studying!

And what exactly is wrong with being annoyed/dissapointed at the closure of a night club?

Are there still any more doubters that Bed has closed for good?

I'm a Music Promoter in and around Sheffield, I've also heard that it is going to open as a live venue and it wants to take the Leadmill on. Which I think is good.

I think maybe the refurb at Republic was done to 'soften the blow' so to speak, so that bed closing wouldn't be such a loss. The refurb was so hyped up it was untrue though and in the end they didn't do half the things they claimed they were doing, and it certainly seems they didn't spend that 1.5m either. They've moved some of the staff too, some of the Bed bouncers now work at Republic. Don't dare ask them what'd happening though, they terrify me!

It's so obvious why they've closed Bed! Since they stopped doing 'Gatecrasher' as a main night in the days of Republic, the club has majorly lost money and has become a student cheap hang out. They had the refurb to keep up with the ' Super clubs', but at the same time running head to head with Bed. Bed was the place to be on a Saturday and easily one of the superclubs of the moment.

Meanwhile they've spent thousands on a new refurb of Gatecrasher one, but whilst Bed was still continuing to out do it every Saturday night. Bed also was despratley in need of a whole refurb, broken furniture, dirty carpets and bad drainage problems and would have been heavilycostly. So it's simple why they closed Bed because it was out rivalling it's new sister club Gatecrasher.

Gatecrasher one is a bigger venue, well established with more money making potential. More capacity, more and bigger bars, bigger cloakroom, equals thousands. Thats why nights like Hed Kandi etc have gone there. They knew that they were the crowd pullers and in a bigger and better club there's more money making potential.

It is sad that Bed has closed but they have been very wise in there decision making. They close Bed in it's hay day, before it went down hill and known as a dirty club. I was a regular Saturday night clubber, every Saturdays after work, I loved it, but where else was there to go really? Thats why it was so good because there was no where else to go, good music and everyone you knew was there aswell.

That way it's the talk of the town raising the profile of Bed and Gatecrasher. It hasn't hurt Bed because they've left on a high and it's now gatecrashers turn to reap the rewards!

The other big reason is that they own The Republic but only rented Bed.

true Tony! Think they had a 25 year lease on the club. Did you know that in the early days bed used to be an M & S? Strange eh?

Starting it at corp is going back to the old days when it started at unit (the same place as corp).

My personal angle on bed is that there is no reason for them to open it again whatsoever. GC lease the place. It cost's them more than its worth. They only had a couple of big nights on a month, which took money away from GC1. So if you think about it logically, keeping bed closed, keeps away competition (from the same people), therefore making more money for the gatecrasher corporation. They're, just keeping it closed till their lease runs out, then it'll be a free building for anyone who wants it. there has been talk about it being turned into student flats, but unless they leave the building as it is, that won't happen as it's a listed building.

just my theory on the situation!

One thing to add to that, i think bed closing has been the best thing to happen in Sheffield for years. look at all of the decent clubs expanding now. Urban Gorilla, Pin up Club, Ahead, etc...
Similar to when cream closed in Liverpool, the city actually benefited from it. a lot of really good clubs became huge. It's about time something happened in Sheffield. I'm made up, as now there's more choice for a night out than there has been for years.

i like the variety of course but i still miss the fact that there is one relatively large club where everybody goes to - was more of a clubbing community in the early days of Bed which i miss

of course that could never be sustained, not in a place like sheffield you can only have too much of a good thing, hence its demise and well lets face it, it was pretty crap at the end

Just read the SheffieldBase article with the quote from ex-Bed DJ Dino. He said that there are no decent house nights left in Sheffield just because Bed has closed!

I went to Scuba on Saturday and the music was great, also been to the Pin Up Club and that was cool too.
