There are hundreds of templates if you look on google.
Second, do a search on the forum - this has been asked before and plenty of good examples have been given.

Employment history first; education second
I always put a summary of skills and personal successes as bullet points right at the start...employers have to scan through lots of CVs; so those that grab their attention are likely to get read.
Don't worry about referees (unless the application specifically asks for them)...if the employer is interested, they will come back and ask you for these.

This is very timely as I am just updating one for OH's brother. Are there any guidelines as to how far back the employment history should go? Should it be everything that anyone has ever done since they left full time education?

I would say yes, but make them one liners if not very relevant to the job they are applying for (ignore really short term ones...anything over a year).

many thanks for the links, will have a look now.
the main prob i am having to be honest, is content!
the CV is for my son and whilst he is older than a school leaver, theres just not a lot of work exp. to put in there!
jobseekers did one for him but its rubbish
gonna bash on with it now......
cheers all.

I would recommend a brief Personal Profile at the beginning, just a short paragraph, this certainly works well for recent school leavers, it's becoming more common, especially for roles in sales/media.
Don't create just one generic CV for everything, consider creating separate CVs targeted to the job description, make it easily 'scannable', on one page, consider highlighting keywords/phrases from the job description in the CV.
Good luck!

Hi, no they shouldn't because it goes against equal opportunities. They ask this in the equal opps form which goes to HR for analysis and which gets detached from the application form.

Hi there,
I noticed on your post that you were wanting a professional CV...I think we have something just up your street
We are completely free and this is a very limited time we have left to do this.
Basically we are The Learning Community and we have a contract under The Humber Consortium which is about to end so we are trying to get the last few people through to our services ASAP. We are delivering employability skills...In your post you mentioned you would likea good CV to use, well in our modules (of which there are 4 with 4 sections to each) we go through organising your job search. We help with CV's and cover letters, we have speculative transscripts for calling/visiting employees which we all know is not an easy thing to do! We have plenty more to learn about too and at the end of the week - of 3 sessions between 10 and 1 on the 6th 7th and 9th of December - we give you the folder which has everything you could possibly need to help you get into work.
Sorry for the long windedness of this message but I feel you would very much benefit from this. As I said, we are free, we even cover bus fairs.
If you would like to look into using our service please contact me on 07816946932 or call the office on 01909564888 I am not office based though so it would be easier to send me a text and I will call you back.
Kind regards,
Stephanie of the Learning Community.

If you have it, Microsoft Office 2010 (in fact any of the Microsoft Offices) offers some great templates including CVs. If not, there are some great downloads on the internet e.g.
http://career-advice.monster.co.uk/c...ates/jobs.aspx
If he is a school leaver, a skills based CV may be better for him, with the focus on things like team building, initiative etc,
eg. http://career-advice.monster.co.uk/c...l/article.aspx
