Ok, not often you get a post from me wanting help, but here goes.

In March i brought a brand new 1.6L Ford Focus GHIA. Through good fortune and family contacts on my ex girlfriends side i was able to get a 6k discount. So an 18k car for 12k, higher than normal price due to modifications like 6-cd disk tray.

Anyway, back then a focus seemed the logical car as there was two of us and we wanted a pug and a french bulldog.

Been on my own for the last 5 months and i really dont need a car this size what with the fuel consumption etc.

I cant decide what to do now. I quite fancy getting a small car like a fiesta or maybe clio though dont know whether it would be worth it due to cost and anticipated savings. Would it be worth my while:

Anyone out there with a wise head on their shoulders who can point me in the right direction?

Cheers

Unless you are getting into debt running this car I'd keep it!!

Sorry to hear the relationship didn't work out with the girlfriend...did you keep the Pug or the French Bulldog or did you never reach the actual purchase stage of the animals???

Nice and handy how you got the car with £6k discount before the relationship ended!!

A very wise man once told me that you should drive the car you enjoy driving. Fuel consumption won't be great between the car you have and one slightly smaller. Just a couple of quid here and there. If you love the car you drive now, keep it. If you just fancy a change then do so, but choose something you'll enjoy driving rather than pick something you feel you ought to have.

I drive a Land Rover Discovery, there's only me, it's huge and thirsty (although I do use it to move disco equipment around from time to time) but it's the car I love and want to drive right now. I get pleasure out of driving it. I used to have a small Fiesta and didn't get any pleasure out of driving that (apart from petrol lasting a bit longer and they cost the same!). For the price of a couple of beers now and then, drive the car you in your heart of hearts enjoy driving.

Talk to Ford.

They may value your car quite highly and do you a good deal.

Thank you all for replying.

To quote in order (not that i can properly!)

Shiesh - Nope, not running into debt. The original agenda was to get the dogs last month, so that never happened. We were going to have them instead of kids...imagine that now!!

It was nice and handy to get the discount! I was very lucky in the first place but she ended the relationship. So i'm not guilty about the discount. Without going into detail, over the last 5 years i spent more than that on her, but thats besides the point.

1 man - Thanks but no thanks. Got one idea, you give me the 6k, i go on holiday and when i come back you give me the car back. Tempted?

ClassicRock - Always the wise lady of rock! One day i will come to the Tavern, but after ChaChas i seem to frequent Nelson on Saturdays. Sorry!

Anyway...I do enjoy driving the car. With 6-cd full of Slayer, Pantera and Arch Enemy..who would't???? I guess i have been looking at the financial side more than anything. Its a great drive nice and smooth and fairly shifty.

Thank you again and you've answered my questions. Think in my heart i decided and just needed a gentle push in the correct direction.

Thanks again

Keep the car you have. The value it'll have lost since you bought it, and the cost/time involved in buying a new car and getting it on the road will outweigh any money saving you would make buy running a smaller car.

And when all said and done, it's only a 1600.
Hardly a Hemi V8 is it...
