I always believed grub errors were to do with Ubuntu/Linux so I may be mistaken - but:

Have a look HERE if using UBUNTU
Quote:
1. Enter BIOS
2. Make sure all HDD's are detected.

* *Take note of (write down) the current settings just in case you need to set things back later**

3. Search for the HDD that has Ubuntu installed and set its MODE to AUTO (not LBA, large, or normal)
4. Also, if you have this option available, set TYPE to USER, but don't change any of the figures that were automatically detected.
5. And you are done!

Just in case this doesn't work, then:
6. Set all drives to TYPE --> USER and MODE --> AUTO (not LBA, large or normal)
Have a look HERE if using Windows XP
Quote:
First, enter the BIOS and make sure that the CD drive is set to boot first. Then, pop in the disk and go to the Windows XP Recovery Console. Then type in the command fixmbr
That will rewrite the boot area, removing all Grub.
And Windows 7/Vista HERE

If that does not work dfisk /mbr often used to correct grub errors. Depends on if you can get to a dos prompt / have boot disk / what O/S etc.

power on, and immediately keep pressing F2 until you get the BIOS screen, you should be able to muddle through from there.

Change the boot sequence to optical drive first, save settings, then reboot pc with your recovery media in the cd/dvd drive

once booting, follow instructions on screen, you will need to format the hard drive if performing a clean install of your OS in order to clear the Master Boot Record.

Grub is the loader that is used by Ubuntu. I presume from what you have said you have recovered the windows partition, not the ubuntu one.

You will need to fix the issue from Ubuntu - have a look here...

Might be F3 on your Vaio (F2 on mine)

Sony VAIO:
Enter the BIOS: Press and hold down F2 or F3 during VAIO screen for menu. Press F1 for setup.

what were you expecting to be restored when you went back to the factory settings?
