Hard one. Mechanics can get good money. Cooks not so much until you have paid your dues, which takes quiet some effort. But if you do make it through it can pay very well and you can travel.
One will give you good money short term. One longer term.
It boils down IMO to which you think you will enjoy most long term.

People will always need to eat. Where will you be when the black gold runs out?

Not if they can't buy petrol/diesel they wont! But yes, of course, you are right. I was being car-ist.

Cooking if you want to meet girls or men that like other men.
Mechanics if you want to be one of the lads.

Both are hard work, i know a professional chef who runs a pub and restaurant and i know a mechanic. Both earn good salaries!
Have you considered health and safety? Oil is carcenogenic, engines get *VERY* hot!
Having said that, ovens and frying pans get hot and knives are sharp!
Not being a lot of help am i?
Whatever you choose, good luck! And if you find yourself doing a job you enjoy, you're a very lucky person!

RPG - cars will not always need to use oil. Probably not BUT -
I took car mechanics years ago and learnt how to strip an engine to its basic parts then put it together again in working order. I take one look at a modern day engine and cringe. Would not know where to start. So many electronics for a start.
I learnt to cook a nice meal doing cookery at school, and guess what - making that meal today would not be a problem. The veg have got no more complicated and I still know how to use a gas cooker.
I can live without my car. I cannot livce without knowing how to cook.

Catering is a very hard job with long hours and bad pay.
I think being a mechanic will pay you more and give you reasonable hours.

Cooking.
A car will need a mechanic (roughly) once or twice a year (if unlucky ).
To pay someone to cook for you (each day) would cost significantly more .

Id say mechancs.
imo Cooking isnt exactly rocket science and you dont need to go somewhere to learn how to do it. Get one of your family members to help you teach you how to cook.
Im the worst cook going, but it still doesnt stop me from making myself s decent(ish) meal when im hungry.

Do them both - if you haven't got time do one now, and the other next year. Assuming mechanics is about cars then a car maintenance course is really useful (same for bike mechanics). I did one a few years ago not particularly so I could mend my own car, though I did learn to service it, more so I knew what garage mechanics were talking about and I didn't get so ripped off when I took my car in for mending! Cooking you can teach yourself really - just get a basic book and either get a friend to help you or learn together.
