Hi Everyone,

I'm Carl, new around here. Myself and my partner are looking to adopt a cat. We'd prefer a cat no older than 2 years old, so it can still grow up with us. We'd like to keep our new pet as a house cat. We wouldn't be able to adopt until September due to holiday and wanting to do lots of research.

I'm looking for advice / tips and places to adopt from. Any of these things that you can provide will be much appreciated.

We are both sure we can provide a loving home and are looking forward to adopting.

Thanks in advance! Look foward to talking to / hearing from you cat owners.

Carl.

mmmm - adopting a cat to be a house cat only - maybe you had best look for an older cat thats happy to be totally indoors. There are hundreds of older cats out there needing homes, and at least you will know what their tempraments are like

lots of rescues on here have cats -

I would get back around end of august when u are actually looking and start to phone round
our website will be updated by then with cat rescue telephone numbers

I think it depends really all cats like to be outdoors but rains right older cats tend to be too lazy to go out. I suppose if you only have one cat or kitten then its going to easy enough to train it to be a house cat by just making sure it never goes out...

I couldnt bare to stop my george going out he loves it too much and Jakes too curious for his own good so there was no way he'd be a house cat...but because we have to let george out jake now follows him cause he wants to know whats so fun about being outdoors lol.

I think its fab that you want a house cat....at least that way it has a fair chance of reaching the age it should.

Maybe you could look at getting a 'disabled' cat that has to stay inside anyway? These poor kitties need homes too and have trouble finding them.

My sister has got two three-legged cats (Wonky and Asbo) and they are wonderful

I personally wouldn't keep a young, fit cat indoors all the time.

Hi,

We have been looking at the RSPCA website, they have a section for 'indoor only' cats and tbh, I think we are already leaning towards a cat from here.

Is there anywhere else in the South Yorkshire that have 'indoor only' cats up for adoption? Or is the RSPCA the best place?

Thanks for the feedback so far everyone!

hello

i just thought i'd say welcome to the forum, and good on you for being so thoughtful and thorough in your approach to adopting a pet (and a rescue one at that).
All the folk on here are lovely and super helpful, having said which - i don't know anything about cat adoption! But good luck, it seems to me that half the time it's the pet that finds you, not the other way around!

Hi MoviePsycho!

Great to hear you're looking to rescue a cat and provide it with a loving home.

I volunteer on reception at the RSPCA most Sundays. As you've already seen, we have some cats which are suited to an indoor life.

Why don't you pop up and see us? The cattery is open for viewings every day except Wednesday, 12.30pm - 3.30pm. Come and take a look!

Thanks :-)

Hi TinkerGirl.

How long can a cat be reserved for? We like the look of Saxon, but can't adopt until mid September...

Thanks!

I wouldn't start looking until you are ready to adopt - say maybe 1 week away. Its not fair to hold a cat in rescue waiting for a home for months like that and I doubt if the RSPCA would hold one. That one may still be there - granted, but if not - there will be lots more around.

thanks for looking around the rescues and taking an older cat - so many want kittens - they just don't stand much of a chance - yet are brilliant cos you can see their characters straight away and find one thats just right for your situation.

Hard not to look. Lol. Getting excited already. Still in the research stage at the moment though. We won't rush into anything or make a wrong decision for us or the cat.

We are certainly looking for an older cat, 6 months - 3 years. But who knows.

Thank you for all your posts so far!

Jess the cat that Gina has is a beautiful cat, only small but pretty, she's had an awful time and deserves a fantastic home where she will be spoilt as she should be.
Jess is really soft and has a fantastic loving nature, if I didn't have so many here I would love to take her myself.

I'm speaking with Gina in the morning. Myself and partner are looking forward to adopting and are confident we can offer a cat a loving home.

Very excited. Good to hear that Jess is such a lovely cat. I will let you know how we get on.

Yes please do, Jess is really purry and even rolls over for belly rubs...unheard of in this house mine would take my arm off if I took such liberties so you see she is a very special cat.

Whether or not you take Jess good luck, I am sure that the perfect cat is out there waiting to be discovered
