So while Google was roaming over 99% of Britain, they wasn't just taking photos, they were collecting info on all the wireless networks (home/business etc), worse still any unsecured networks could have had packets/data downloaded! I never had any problems with my home being photographed, but I think this new tatic is a real invasion of privacy.

Google really are a bit scary. It's stuff like this that puts me off getting an Android phone.

they weren't capturing packets to try and sniff out what you were up to or anything sinister like that.

On Android, location based services are used a lot. Your location can be derived via the GPS or via other radios. The GPS is battery hungry and needs a 'view' of the sky. Using the radios the device will fall back to cell triangulation, which isn't overly accurate. To aid this - it can use the location of known wifi hot spots to help increase the accuracy.

For example, in the city centre my location can be correct to around 50m due to the presence of some BT Openzone hotspots. Moving out of the centre, still with GPS off, then the best it can manage is normally around 300-500m.

That's not news, and lots of websites have collected info
on free/public and unsecured networks.. You can get maps of them
all over the place..

And the story gets better (or worse - depending on what you think is 'reasonable')
