A lot of posters on S.F. are continually attacking America and other well-off countries for being greedy and corrupt. That's not surprising , since a large number of people in the world , everywhere are greedy and always have been , and sadly , many are corrupt.
Even in a very poor country like Chad , there are doubtless , 'Haves ' and , 'Have-Nots ' and probably some sort of corruption.
However , what is perhaps surprising to hear is the emerging story of the corruption inside the U.N , regarding the ,"Food or Aid for Oil " programme with Iraq. Kofi Annan [?] announced that all the U.N. officials should feel ashamed at what had gone on . I suppose that does include himself , although there was apparently no evidence that he knew that a company belonging to or associated with his son was deeply involved with the corruption.[!]
Whilst all this will come as no surprise to some people , I'm surprised that we haven't heard a huge screech of disgust from the Left. Imagine if Bush and the Americans were in ,"the Dock" !!
No doubt a lot of terrible suffering would have been avoided in Iraq had these officials been honest.
At the time all the suffering was blamed on the sanctions.
Also , I often used to wonder , in the midst of all the suffering , why Saddam didn't sell off a couple of his palaces to help his sick and starving people. No doubt , too busy , raiding the Iraqi Central Bank Vaults for a few more millions to keep him and his followers in the style to which they had become accustomed .

I'm a great supporter of the UN in principle, but have always been concerned about the 'Corporate Governance' aspect of it.

To be fair, I get the feeling that the report also implicated some Governments as well as UN officials, but I would have seriously expected Kofi Annan to resign - I find it hard to believe that a basic 'due dilligence' search would not have reveled the connections between the UN Secretary General and the company for which his son worked.

The richer nations of the world fund the UN to a great degree, as is proper, but they should also be able to see that the money ends up where it's supposed to go!

The UN has corruption. So does the EU. so do almost all large bodies.

as you said Fareast it is human nature. The level of corruption from all parties involved in African nations is quite scary.

Doesn't this explain why the UN were so against the war with Saddam?

Or am I just a cynic who deosn't appreciate the goodness of Mr Onan and co?

not totally. I suspect some member countries (not mentioning France at all here) were more concerened about their oil agreements than any other consideration.

you could also say on that basis that the coalition went in to secure oil and building contracts for their own companies 9which they did to a degree)
