What temperature my CPU is going at?
my pc is a E-machines with
Pentium 4 CPU @ 2.50GHz
1.43GB of RAM
80GB HD
Windows Xp Home with Sp3
as my computer is a bit slow, and thinking might need to put some AS5 thermal paste on the CPU to cool it if its at a high Temp.
cheers all.

Is your computer really slower than when you first bought it, or are you simply asking more of it now?
Try checking what bumpf you have loading at startup and dissable as much as possible. Type 'msconfig' (no inverted commas) into the run box/command prompt, and select the startup tab.

Drivers wont make it go faster [this isnt a gaming machine].
Buying a new hard drive and reinstalling windows will make it go faster.
It is possible that the processor is overheating and throttling. P4s can throttle back. I normally wouldnt want to suggest that this is likely over all the other reasons why computers seem slow, but as I'd assume this machine is 5+ years old, it would be about the time where thermal compound passes its sell by date. Couldnt hurt to put some new paste down.
Edit: Graphics cards of that type wont throttle and slow your machine down, if their paste is gone and its overheating. It will just make your machine unstable during gaming.

thats what i was thinking, applying some new thermal paste, AS5 i have read is the ideal paste, on some of the forums through google.

Get a new hard drive and do a fresh install of Windows. Maybe up the RAM if you can?
Quicker and easier than the hassle of backing up your files and re-installing.

1gb is fine for xp but if the motherboard supports dual channel you would be better off changing the 512mb stick for a 1gb as it would run a lot faster in dual channel mode. also i would recommend a fresh install of xp as it is most often the case with older machines. also what programme are you using to check your emails? what browser do you use? ie8 can show the error you mentioned if using certain plugins....also go to the adobe website and download the latest flash player. i would also recommend uninstalling all the old software you dont use anymore and then downloading ccleaner from filehippo and running the disk clean-up (tick all boxes apart from wipe free space) and then a registry clean............let me know if it helps (maybe a cpu upgrade is in order to around 3ghz)

ain't got a clue wether it supports dual channel, browser i use FireFox, still have IE8 on here But dont use that, as i find firefox is much better, theres not a new flash player yet as have checked still only have 10 for now, i have CCcleaner, have run disc clean up a few times, dont really have the money to upgrade the CPU, yet, and dont think its worth bothering really is it ? and i have been through some of my programmes, and deleted that i dont use/want ect, might just give that ago like other person says, about adding some fresh thermal paste on the CPU.
thanks for you help though.

yes its always a good idea to re-apply thermal paste every 2-3yrs (i re-do mine every year) also clean out all the dust from the heatsinks/fans or even replace a fan for a slightly better spec one as it always helps. also if you have a graphics card it would also help as the inbuilt graphics use your systems resorces (i.e ram) a friend also had a similar problem to yours and i recommended adding a heatsink to the inbuilt graphics as i noticed it was running hot (remember a lot has changed in the last 5 year and even browsing websites is more demanding due to new standards and more advanced graphics applications used) the only other option is a fresh install......and if its still running slow a upgrade is needed
