I suspect it would be cheaper to hire van-and-driver - many advertise on the forum in the £25-per-hour region - than to hire a pantechnicon, given that the hire company would have to insure you to drive it.
As a side thought, are you even allowed to drive an HGV? My licence certainly does not allow me to do so. Perhaps you've already thought of this and know you'd be okay.
Sounds like you could do with either a long wheel based mercedes sprinter van or a Luton type van. I've hired them from M&G van hire before. They have changed their name now I think to Northgate.
Sprinter van = £58 for 24hrs
Luton van = £66 for 24hrs
if you have a pre 1996 licence which allows you to drive C1 vehicles you could hire a 7.5 tonne truck
you need to be careful with the suggestions of XLWB sprinters are some are C1 anyway and if you aren't careful you can overload a 3500kg one either in total or front axle in particular
When i move house I want to rent a very VERY large van for 24 hours.
Last time i move i rented a standard transit van and made god knows how many trips too and from and this time I dont want to have to do that.
I think I can get someone to drive it for me so its just the van i need. Unless its cheaper to pay for a driver as well.
Any ideas how much? or when from?
we provide 2 men and a van for £45 an hour....so if the move takes 5 hours thats only £225....to do it yourself youll save about half that...
