I'm putting this in this section too in order to get a good response - I need to find out whats up with my car. As you might be able to see in the next couple of lines, I'm not the most technical person in the world.
The lights all come on and I normally have to wait for the engine light to go off before I turn the ignition. When I do all I hear is a click and nothing else.
I've tried to jump start it but no use.
NOW HERES THE TECHNICAL ANALYSIS:
Theres a little windey bit that turns above the engine - produces the click and spins back to it's original setting.
Anyone??

If it was anything to do with the starter motor, it would more likely be the solanoid.
Windey bit that turns above the engine ? Does it have cables coming out of the top ?
What car is it ? age etc..

Ok! either your battery is flat or the solenoid on your starter motor is defective.
Tap it with a hammer when someone tries to start it for you.....
IT could also be an earth fault from your battery to the engine....

The good news is that this shouldn't cost too much to have fixed.

From what you have described it sounds like a desiesil...
Deisel cars have very high compression so they need a really powerful starter and a heavy duty battery. First thing I would try is get a new battery if your one is more than 5 years old. Your wasting your time completely with a starting fault if your battery is old and tired.

Sound advice
An alternative is:
Stick car in second gear.
Do not try to start the car, but get someone to gently push/rock the car.
If the starter is jammed this will free it (I occasionally have this problem myself).

I've just checked in the manual and think the bit in question is called a 'Distributor'??
It is the bit above the engine that turns and then clicks back into place. It has cables around it. . . . hehe . . . Stop laughing you lot!

Try putting the headlights on and then watch them as some-one tries to start the car, if they are dim to start off with or dim a lot when the key is turned then it's a battery problem.
A jammed starter motor can sometimes be freed up with a few taps on it with a wooden mallet, don't use your claw hammer as that will smash things.
The windy thing??? You'rre not referring to your distributor are you? I assume the distributor cap is on and hasn't been removed by some practical joker.

I take it the engine does not turn over when you try to start it with the key?
Try what DelBoy says, or the method I described above.
The dizzy (distributor) will do this regardless of whether the engine is turned over by a starter motor.

Right, I'm off to try the hammer trick before the rain starts. 
If there is a loud explosion heard from the Fir Vale area in the next 10 minutes or so - it's probably not thunder . . . .
If there is a large column of smoke from here - it's not lightening either. And I'll probably not be posting for a while either.

The hammer thingy worked on the starter thingy!!!
I got someone to sit in the car and turn it on and off whilst I kept whamming the starter motor. It started up a treat.

p.s. You cant keep doing that trick forever, The Starter Motor will finally go in the end. Hopefully youve still got a good a few good innings left in it.
