We are increasingly seeing variable speed cameras on motorways in and around the north of England. Stocksbridge bypass in Sheffield has them, and for a while now, the roadworks on the M1 for around 16 miles by Nottingham have them also. Does anyone know anyone who has been prosecuted, particularly with the ones on the M1? I am a frequent traveler between Sheffield and Northampton and frequently see cars that must well be exceeding on average the 50 mile "average" speed limit on the M1 here, BUT have not heard yet of any prosecutions for going over this average speed here? Any advice?

Switch lanes between cameras.

Apparently that flaw has been fixed. Can't remember where I read it though. It can't be a difficult program change on their computers, so I wouldn't consider it to be untrue.

Yes, that flaw has been fixed. I'm related to someone who is involved in the management of that sort of speed trap. Stick to the speed limit.

There are loads of 50 mph zones on motorways all across the North at the moment while they remove the metal barriers and replace them with concrete ones.
I see loads of people whizzing by faster than 50mph, so they're either not bothered with getting a fine or they don't work.

I see loads of people speeding over 50 and then slowing really down when the nest camera comes up. Dont they realise they do some time thing and time you to see how long it takes you to get from 1 to the next

There's some on the motorway between Carlisle and Glasgow and a sign as you're entering the 50MPH limit says "2,200 prosecutions for speeding" or similar. Can't remember the exact wording.

The problem with cruise in the roadworks are all the other people without it.

They work by calculating time traveled between cameras which are set distances apart.
So if camera A is 1 mile from camera B and speed limit is 60 any quicker than 60 seconds to pass the measurement points results in fine. But these also have to give a % error allowance like most speed cameras.

Some people simply don't get how they work.
I was once in the passenger seat of a car being driven through an average speed zone. I commented that I thought the driver was going significantly faster than the speed limit. She said something like 'oh it's ok - I slow down for the cameras.'
From the ensuing discussion I discovered that she had interpreted 'average speed' as 'take 4 separate fixed speed measurements, total them and divide by 4' where as I interpreted 'average speed' as: 'record entry and exit time and then divide distance between cameras by the time difference'.

"Between May 2008 to October 2009, 5,084 vehicles were recorded as breaking the 50 mph limit, on a stretch used by about 131,000 vehicles daily."
Though it is between junctions 25 and 28, not as far up as Sheffield.

Strikes me as an incredibly low hit rate, only one in every 14,000 vehicles were detected to be breaking the speed limit. Less than 10 per day! And it doesn't mention whether all of those were prosecuted.
