I'm doing some work with a client and am interested on other employers views/knowledge on the following subject.

If you employ staff, there are certain policies that you need to have in place; I'm interested to find out what level of knowledge employers have of what they have to have in place (as an example, a contract of employment)?

Where would you look to find such things?

I'm also interested to find out how many have plans in place if a disaster takes place (flooding/fire being the obvious one)?

Thanks.

Following on from the flooding/fire scenario, which I believe is swim or run.

When I worked in Leeds I had to, in conjunction with the local police, write a specific risk assessment for an emergency/act of terrorism. This had to be different to other risk assessments, in the sense that you had different roles, different meeting points etc.
It also had to cover events such as a leaking petrol delivery wagon being parked outside your premises.

To find information on employment law and requirements have a look at the direct.gov.uk website http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/index.htm

Are you talking about business continuity plans, or a plan to leave the building by the nearest fire exit?

From my experience very few know what they need to do as an employer and even fewer have recovery plans.
I always try to educate my clients and encourage them to seek my advice when the business changes so that I can ensure that everything is done correctly.

The direct.gov.uk, ACAS and business link websites seem to cover most areas in terms of responsibility.

I think what the OP (Steve) is trying to do is ascertain how local employers would cope, and where they look to find their info. He's not asking the question for himself for you to tell him because he can't Google it himself. He's surveying us, if you like.
