you often hear how high above sea level things are, what I would like to know is how can you find out how high you are? is there a website you can enter a post code for example which works it out for you?

Google earth does it for you.

If you look at the bottom of google earth it shows the position and elevation.
If the elevation don't display tick the terrain box in the layers window.

For those that aint tried google earth yet, you can find it here:-

Yes, you will see the faint contour lines (terrain view) which are marked at every 100 metres difference above sea level, with the 20 metre intervals in between; this is the same as the red contour lines on an Ordinance Survey map.

Google Earth! Just position your mouse over the area you're checking - zoom in to make it as accurate as possible and at the bottom of the screen in the middle will tell you the elevation and far left of screen at the bottom the eye altitude in km.

Just to be pedantic, Google Earth is not a website, as requested by the OP, but a program that requires installation!

Well, it's not a website, but the OP did ask: "how can you find out how high you are?" So, Google Earth is an answer!
