Having only fairly recently moved back to the Sheffield area, I'm finding it quite difficult to find places to go and meet people of a similar age (50ish) It seems it is not the done thing for ladies of a certain age to go out on their own for fear of being looked upon as either 'stood up' or 'wanting to be picked up'. I don't particularly want to go out alone so can anyone recommend any good places to go.
I have been widowed for a number of years and have spent the last few years abroad, so I'm a little out of touch.
I can't believe I'm the only one in this position. Come on girls, where do you go for a good night out!!
I'm also a bit of a novice to internet chat rooms, as you've probably guessed, but at least it saves me talking to myself.

Have you looked in to joining the WI? or isn't that really your thing?
Visit:
http://www.womens-institute.co.uk/memb-fed.shtml#s
and then scroll down a bit to South Yorkshire.
Just an idea - hopefully someone else will have a better one ops:

Looks like you guys scared her off!
What becomes of members such as this? Only 2 posts many moons ago. Do they forget they joined and re-register as somebody else? Do they eventually get deleted?
We could start guessing who she is now
You've been rumbled, Owdlad

Sure you didn't just meet Mr. Strix?
I was talking to an old friend about the difficulties experienced for a single 40 plus year old to go out and socialise with people. Most of the clubs and pubs make you feel like a granny or grand-dad and any older people you know seem to be in relationships or sit at home with their computer and dog for company.

But I bet Max understands every word you say
Brude just feigns ignorance when we have company, so when I ask him to 'bring that chewstick here' or 'put that in the bin' it's me who looks silly

I'm just gobsmacked at seeing Geoff answer a post! Was starting to wonder if he was a bit like Charlie in Charlie's Angels - an all knowing, all seeing presence who is never actually seen himself..
I have had this Geoff thing at the back of my mind for a few days now - even spoke to a mod at a meet recently and he has never seen him either!
Has anyone seen him? Is Geoff reading this? Will I get a piccy? or a PM? or a lifetime ban? lol I propose a pic if Geoff would be so kind:

Good places to go for 50ish people?
Why don't you try sheffield united ground. I think they can just about manage 50 seats.

You youngsters!!! Just you wait in not so many years you'll be remembering fondly your hi jinks and your thirties. It can be a problem for people in their 40's and 50's finding venues where they feel comfortable. I'd take up ballroom at the city hall tea dances if i didn't have two left feet.
A friend of mine was in her 50's and found herself single and very lonely, she had spent most of her adult life bringing up a family and so hadn't held down a paid job in years. She went to a second hand shop and volunteered to man the till three afternoons a week, it was amazing how many gentlemen asked her out and she found a new circle of friends with the other staff and several of the regular customers.

I though all potential mods had to meet Geoff, I believe there is some strangeness with an elephant that has to be undergone before Mod status is assigned
or is it just an urban myth

Strangeness with an elephant---------what could that be?
Is it like the Masons?
Do all Mods swear allegiance to Geoff?

I read it in a thread ages ago, something to do with a model elephant. Have just done a search for 'mod elephant' and nothing was found

what's the elephant thing, is it a sort of coded message that I don't understand---- "is it cos I'm old "
PS
Geoff was very good to me and actually took time to email me, when i had difficulty registering I didn't realise at the time how busy he was so thanks Geoff.
