Hi
Two pubs long gone, does anyone remember these pubs.
They were both on penistone rd next to each other, the owl was on
the opposite side of the road to the Royal Lancer pub and Owl was opposite
Crusteel.
? Does anyone know what they were like.
? does anyone know when they where shut down
Thanks

If you can obtain a book from a library entitled A Pub On Every Corner you will find some information about both `pubs` on page 235 and Map 30.Hope this helps.

If you look at page 235 it lists the `OWL` as number 25 on the map but does not give a closing date. The `Royal Lancer is number 31 and it says it closed in 1988.

I think they closed around 1980.

I lived in the Owl for about 7 years (53-60).My parents ,Charles and Nellie Senior were the managers. My dad was an ex Osborn's man so we got a lot of his old workmates in.The customers' names I remember are Billy Mead.Billy Biggles.Jim Cavanagh,Ben Fielding,Florrie Hartley and sons,an old bloke called Colin who used to walk from Hillsborough every day,an Irishman,John Gorman and a couple of Poles,Ginger and Polish John.

Sorry,I didn't answer your question about what the Owl was like.It was really nothing special-just two rooms, the larger of which was called the best room and the smaller was called the tap room although they were not the official names. There was also a stuffed owl perched on a rabbit in a glass case mounted over the bar.It was, what was known then as a beer house, it being unable to sell spirits as it didn't have the appropriate license. It certainly wasn't the sort of place you'd go for a special night out:all the customers were locals and there were never any fights or troublemakers. As I recall, there wasn't even any noticeable drunkenness.I believe there were some petty thieves among the clientele but they never caused any problems. My dad was quite a success as manager and could have moved on to other John Smith's pubs in town but preferred a quiet life and stayed put at the Owl.

I really don't know for sure as I left Sheffield a long time ago.It was probably sometime in the 80s.If you contact John Smiths brewery I'm sure they'll be able to tell you.

The Don closed in the '60's and as I don't remember the Owl on Penistone Rd-not the old Farfield-that must have closed around then also.

Yep, it belonged to the landlord - a bloke by the name of Ralph Salt.
It closed down for good after the floods a couple of years ago, before that it was used as a B&B and the bar was for the "residents"
Cant remember exactly when it closed as a full time pub, but I worked there about 15 years ago...

I used to drink in the Owl years ago when it was run by Ralf and his wife . It was always a good place to get a drink after hours .
I wonder where Ralf and his wife are now ?
( was her name Angie ?)

Were these two pubs victims of the road widening work?
