I had a bit of walk around there recently, looking back at where I grew up.

From memory (it was only about three months ago, but I'm getting old), there was a hairdressers at the far end (left hand side), a newspaper shop and bizarely, a computer repair shop. The large shop that I think was a co-op in the old days was still boarded up, and the building at the far right (used to be a hairdressers I think?) was also closed.

I took a couple of photos, but stupidly missed the open shops. Despite the look from these pictures, it seemed to be reasonably thriving.

Thanks Rich, Shame there isnt much more on there. Seems like the perfect area for a butchers or proper grocers.

Do you know, I could have sworn that those were the very stores that were there, back when I was a child, both there, and on the John o' Gaunt shops across the Valley.

PS, the large store on the end, IIRC was a co-op stores, RichK, before becoming a furniture store for Remar about 10/12 years ago. I also believe it had a stint as a Gym, at one point.

I grew up on Herdings and from about the 80s onwards, those shops always struggled. Shops would open up, last about a year or two, then close. I don't think they could make it pay, especially as more and more people got cars and could shop much further afield.

it was brill up there when when i had my shop next to jenny and micks and at the other side julia and mick, the gym on the end opened up a few months after we got there. i bumped into jenny a few weeks ago and she said our shop had turned into an ebay shop or something.
we used to have a right laugh in summer we would all sit outside our shops having water fights and a sneaky can or glass of wine
