Do you think it is better to have prices on a website or leave them off ?
What are the benefits

I can only assume you mean photographer websites? Personally I think it works for some and not for others.

My business setup is geared around being transparent with no hidden costs. It works well for me as people know exactly what they are getting from the outset. If they don't like it then I am more than happy for them to go elsewhere.

For some though, they like price not to be a consideration whilst they are being booked... i.e. if they client really wants them they will pay regardless. Which in itself can work just as effectively. I can see the merits to this approach however it is just not for me.

For myself, my price is generally secondary to what I offer as a package and what I produce. Say for example with my wedding work I only do one package at one price. But I also have a less conventional way of capturing a wedding and will not change my style for anyone. People either book me because they want what I produce or they don't. I'm quite lucky though as I work in a number of areas so I'm never in a position where I feel I have to say "yes" because I need the income.

I think it's best to give some 'guide prices' to give the visitors some indication of prices.

I think that to have no idea of the price is not helpful on a website, but to have specifics of prices gets messy, so if you were to put 'wedding packages from £xxx' and then include the contents of the basic package (for instance) then as a potential customer I'd find that helpful.

People can call or email for more detailed pricing costs, but in my experience they won't call or email if they don't think that they can afford it in the first place.

Not having prices would certainly turn me off from pursuing things any further. The web page is your gateway to the outside world, and as such it needs to give people the information they need to continue with a transaction. Even a guide price will tell people if it's worth contacting you or not. It also works the other way - if your prices are on display, it saves you time answering "how much for this?" questions.

Depends on the type of work you are doing.
With Weddings it is easy to have a price list for services.
With commercial work, it is so very varied, there's no point in having prices listed and you have to quote for each job individually.
So those who do social photography [weddings/portraits] may well have prices listed, those who do other work tend not to.
