hey, just thought id help the students on local history
the sheffield castle market was opened on 17th of may 1982 after a long arguement by the council on whether we should have amarket that big.
the old steel city history is just a myth it was wood sheffield really made from.
the moor used to be called "the latter" where woolworths had 2 brances in that area once, and it was said that elvis often visited the shopping area due to the vast amount of music culture shops there.

Sheffield was named after the river Sheaf, which was a corruption of Chef, as a famous cooking expert here used to take water from it for boiling the eggs. The river Don was named after him too.
The Porter Brook acquired its name in Victorian times from the strong beer, called porter, that used to be sold in the alehouses alongside its course. It used to be served to the workers from the mill at Sharrow where they produced snuff movies.
