When taking evidence, Tory MP David Curry asked the transport department's permanent secretary Robert Devereux:

'Why are cyclists such irresponsible and arrogant road users?

'The only time I've been knocked down in my life was by a cyclist going like a bat out of hell outside the Commons, dressed like Darth Vader, as they all do. They do not take any notice of red lights. They think traffic cones are not for them.'

1/

I hate cyclists who use the pavement. They annoy the hell out of me and I have shoulder-charged them before.

2/

Having said that, what on earth is the MP on about? "Dressed like Darth Vader"??!!!

If he had made the same sweeping statement about car drivers "Drivers are always ignoring traffic lights, they think they're above the law, and they all wear stupid clothes", what do you think the reaction would be?

That's not Darth Vader.

The cape would flap into the rear wheel and he would find it hard to be scary trying to untangle it from the chain.

Well there are good and bad road users of all types. Suppose its a bit of a generalisation though. Politicians should know better. I cycle every day I think im a considerate cyclist. I dont tend to stop at red lights unless
I really have to. dont see the point really

I see kids with their bums hanging out of their jeans slouching along the pavement on stupid BMX bikes. They scare elderly people, they're basically DARING someone to challenge them.

When MP David Curry lumps me, a law-abiding cyclist, in with those bumclowns it makes me angry. Saying "all cyclists break the law" is a stupid, divisive, counter-productive load of old trousers.
