thanks probedb. do you know what the difference in file size would be between a two hour movie in divx and one in mp4?

I just bought a twin screen dvd player for the car which can play both formats from either disc or usb stick so I'm trying to decide which format and which storage

any recommendations for software? I've got handbrake installed and think that might do it but again I have no access at the moment

Format Factory is a good free-ware program and very easy to use(and quick).I personally find dvix to be better quality over mp4 as mp4 is mainly used for the smaller screen mp4 players. You should quite easily be able to fit 4-7 films on a dvd in any of the formats so the difference is minimal.I would try both formats and choose which you feel is best to suit your needs.
Jay.

thanks corsaman it's for the kids to watch bob the builder on 7 inch screens in the back of the car so I guess the difference in quality will be next to nothing and the kids won't notice so I'll go for whichever gets the most content on one dvd

If your players will play .avi files, get any decent GNU/Linux distro with DVDrip (or is it ripDVD) - will convert a 4.7Gb DVD into a CD size .avi file!

Sorry commuter - have you looked at Super! - www.erightsoft.com - and its free - I would watch the program though as it appears to want to track what you are doing - just block this in Comodo internet security if you have it.
