Third of Sheffield taxis fail spot check.
According to 'The Star'.
http://www.thestar.co.uk/headlines/T...ail.5702935.jp
A total of 273 checks took place on 162 drivers and 111 vehicles - and 102 had breached the rules, Sheffield Council has revealed.
I know of some taxi's that are shared by father and sons or between brothers and will probably spend many many hours on the road before they undergo any form of 'official' safety checks.

On the badge sharing point.
Badge sharing has been going on for decades, though I'd venture to say that it seems to have been tightened up lately. It's easy to spot, either the photo doesn't match the driver,or the driver has turned the ID card around, often hanging on a small chain, which is twisted to make it look like the back of the card is showing accidentally.Occasionally you'll see no badge at all.
Regarding the condition of vehicles,I wonder why it's neccessary to have any checks beyond a regular MOT,perhaps it could be enforced bi-annually at a subsidised rate?.I confess,I didn't read the article,so I'm not sure as to which particular criteria are not being complied with but I would be quite happy to travel in taxis well below the standards of space and comfort to which I'm used to,though obviously, safety must be the paramount consideration.

Well the 'Star' article is there on the post above yours; maybe it would have been a good idea to read it before posting.

Seems like the worst offenders were private hire vehicles rather than black cabs.
And why "dangerous" - one private hire vehicle prosecuted for being in poor condition hardly makes Sheffield cabs dangerous.

'Dangerous Sheffield Taxis'
I don't think the Daily Mail could have come out with better misleading lines, to either of the above bolds.

Firstly.. 4 months(c.120 days) 273 checks? hmmm, that sounds right.
That sounds like a comprehensive clamp down. 2.2 stops per day? Yeah right.

I can't imagine anyone avoiding taxi insurance in Sheffield. When I drove I had to provide this info every week. And I'm not dodgy!

So rather than a third of 273 are dangerous, 3 out of 273 required a prosecution. That's 3 too many I would admit, but 3 into 273 isn't a third.

Two private hire drivers were prosecuted for plying for hire without hackney carriage licences, which means they are not insured to collect passengers who have not booked in advance.
|
2 PHV drivers were pulled up for picking up without having a legal fare. OMG, hold the front page.

One received six penalty points on his licence and was fined £100, ordered to pay £75 costs and a £15 surcharge. The other also received six penalty points, a £50 fine and had to pay £45 costs.
|
They were checking for insurance, yet only one received 6 pen points... if my knowledge is correct then 6 points, is 3 short of the 9 you get, for not being insured. So were all 273 insured or what?
This is the worst story the Star could waste on a front page. I may have made 1 or 2 mistakes in my post, but I bet I'm right in more of what I've written to 100,000 less people.

Your thread title is very misleading. the article mentions nothing about "dangerous taxis".

The Star article is a component part of the "fred notdead" post.I didn't condone or dispute anything to do with the article, neither did I presume any of its content.I politely adressed "fred notdead" regarding his last paragraph.

taxis should be treated the same as mini buses and be checked every two months, they are still public service vehicles....no matter that they may carry four or five passengers...that would keep the cowboys and indians off the road....

Well said, that is the trouble with many people on these forums; either misquoting or misconstruing what has been said/written.

.. and you're right - a totally misleading headline....
There are 2000 PH and over 800 Hackney cabs in Sheffield, so if over a third failed checks then that'd equate to about 1,000.....
Typical 'sensationalist' headline.

you like we have to.....only costs £50....and it may get rid of those people who don't even have a license.....less cars on the road means more work for those who play by the rules...

The thread title has recently been changed to something more accurate than "Dangerous Sheffield Taxis".
