Agree with the Epiphones.
I've had an Epi Les Paul for about 5 years and it is a wonderful guitar to play, arguably a more comfortable feel than my Gibson Les Paul! Its neck is slightly thinner than the Gibson and I've recorded loads of songs with it. The Epi is now my back-up guitar and for what it cost (£400? IIRC) it's a great guitar.
As I've said before though, the Gibson is in a class of its own. The pick-ups have more balls than United's Soccer Academy and the electrics (pots and wires) are wonderful. Unfortunately, this is where Epiphones compromise, hence the cheap price. You gets what you pays for and Gibsons are worth every penny.
If you can get an Epiphone, you shouldn't be disappointed but I would recommend maybe installing more powerful pick-ups and to keep an eye on the wiring.
Finally, having played guitar since 1983, a bit of advice: If you keep your guitar in a gig bag, it's like keeping your jewellery in a brown paper bag. Good guitars are kept in solid cases and another thing, they'll last a lot longer in one! Add another £30 to your budget and buy a proper case.
