On the news this morning, A Councillor from Wolverhampton said he would like to get rid of our National song "Land of hope and Glory"
Has he got a point?
I think so. I will also answer the lottery thread at the same time.
If I won the lottery, I would get the hell out of here while we still can!.

In that case we should wander around singing it at every opportunity, even if it's just to annoy our elected representatives.
I wonder whether these people realise how much they act as recruiting Sergeants for the far right by picking on such things?
I would love to see our Government and local elected representatives taking on a few 'hard targets' like big business, inefficient government departments, rising violent crime and decaying urban landscapes rather than the tough questions of the day like banning songs.

Can we come to a compromise?
Let's sing it in the same accent as the Indian fella at the end of It Ain't Half Hot Mum. All together now: 'Land of hope and glory, Mother of the free'.
SHAAADDDAAAAAPPPPPPP!!!
Sitars give it more of a multi-ethnic feel than violins and cellos, dontchathink?!
I'm warming to the idea.

I think we should show understanding to anyone in Wolverhampton if they occasionally manifest signs of dottiness. The performance of the Wolves in recent years has been enough to drive all Wolverhamptonians completely mad - a situation exacerbated by the shameless flaunting by Baggies' supporters of their Premiership status.

Hahah, I used to love that as a kid "Mr lardy da gunner Graham" Winsor Davies rocked.
Why is it politicians have this fantastic ability to take something no-one cares about, and get it in the news, so even less people care. Next weeks headline "MP for Wigan says we should stop singing humpty dumpty, because the sky is blue" or similar..

It was only a "deferred success", they'll "put Humpty together again" eventually...
...unless some unfeeling fascist warps their mind into thinking they can't of course.
PS: I like Ousetunes' idea, the sitars really would do it !

Slight qualification, which does not necessarily alter the foolishness of the proposal:
"get rid of" is in fact a proposal to replace LOHAG in the Wolverhampton Council Service of Remembrance. The proposal is to replace it with "Sailing" by Rod Stewart as this would have "greater relevance" to younger people!!!

Here you go again, trying to please the immigrants ,maybe you ought to tell them to go to hell.
Land of hope and glory is something to be sung out loud by all you english .
Why do some people want to kill all your traditions?
Good that in Poland nobody wants to ban our great national songs.
If somebody is immigrant then he/she should be ready to hear national songs of country in which he is living in.If they don't like that they should go home and sing their songs in their country.
Maybe you think that 'God save the Queen' also should be banned, just to show how much you love your non-white immigrants. I am sure that they will be very pleased if you do that. To thank you they will put some bombs in public places to show how much they are grateful
Do you really want your children to sing african or pakistan songs instead of your british songs?

At the moment "The Wiggles" seem quite popular...
...and they're Australian.

Immigrants?????
Wolverhampton council will decide on the motion forwarded by the Labour councillor Peter O'Neill.
He said: "The matter was raised at a previous meeting of the Festival of Remembrance working party when I was acting chairman. I expressed my personal view that the song had political connotations.
"If the working party members wish the song to feature in the celebrations, it shall certainly do so."
He declined to say why exactly he objected to Edward Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance and why he thought the words written for it were political, adding: "It's just my personal view."
He said Sailing would be a more appropriate song because it was more relevant to the younger generation.

may i suggest that if he ever attends a rememberance parade he asks the opinion of the people who are on the parade, and the first three words of the song should be enough to unite all parties / religions/races that live here

How ridiculous. Bad timing too, only a few days after the boxer Amir Khan chose the song to go out to the ring to in a show of national unity and pride. I think it could even be promoted to National Anthem (if the monarchy ever goes, especially).

That is a most moving song .
I remember being at the Labour party conference at the Sheffield arena, and a lone cornet player playing that, It was brilliant.
I just would like to change the word "Lamb" to "PORK" in the song (Not a lamb fan )
