magsie-I think it's ok as long as you don't have a shared extrance. But it is possible to get permission if you live in a flat-I *think* all the residents of the block have got to agree-and then you get it in writing-but don't quote me-I'm very often wrong about things

Also, who is likely to find out if someone gets a cat in a council flat anyway? A dog granted, it has to be taken out, but a cat is easier to keep secret.

Great advice! Break your tenancy agreement and risk eviction by "secretly" getting a cat

Oh come on-I didn't TELL people to go and do it did I? I just pointed out that it's unlikely that anyone will find out.

Don't you think another tenant would say something? A tenant maybe who was allergic to cats or one who didn't like the smell. Or one who just didn't like the cat owner or one who had a sad and empty life and thought it would be their fifteen minutes of fame. I wouldn't risk my tenancy.

Bru-Sheff - brilliant.
The reason I'm asking is that animals are being dumped and the reason a lot of council tenants are giving is that someone might have complained that they have a cat, even an indoor cat, and they say they have no alternative but to either have their pet put to sleep or ask a rescue centre to take it, even though rescue centres are up to their eyes in strays already.
One council tenant told me he was allowed to keep one pet only. Then another said no pets. I needed a quick response which would not be forthcoming from the Council, but will try anyway.
Thanks so much for replying!

Shanes Teeth, are you actually saying that if a council tenant has a pet they are breaking their tenancy agreement. This is the kind of info I need. Is it written into your tenancy agreement that you cannot keep a pet and you would be evicted if you did? Thanks.

Bru-Sheff, I need a quick response and the Council switchboard is closed! And when I said brilliant, I meant that, you made me laugh!

Yes if you have shared access, ie lift or stairwell, it is written into your tenancy agreement that you can't keep pets. You can be evicted for keeping them.

Is an indoor cat a little bit like those indoor fireworks from years back..........
But are not reptiles classed as pets and there are plenty of them living in council properties.............................

If you are in council house then you are allowed to keep domestic pets as long as they are not a nuisance to neighbours

^THIS^

Two years in council housing with two cats now, with a shared entrance hall to three flats. You're fine so long as none of the neighbours have a problem with it, or the council says otherwise (which would only be due to a neighbour's complaint or some damage being caused and found out).

Technically your meant to have written agreement from the shared neighbours but no-one does this in practice and pretty much everyone in council homes round us have pets of some sort.

Thanks so much for all this. I can now act on helping to rehome a couple of cats as it is due to a neighbour's complaint that they need to be rehomed. The present owner is very upset but a good home awaits the cats, so good result.
Thanks again everyone.
Mod - the post can be closed now thanks.

Its compulsary. You must have at least two cats and one cross breed dog that you never walk to live in a council property. You must also pledge to treat it like a squat and burn at least 2 wheelie bins a year in back yard bonfires. Hope this helps

I actually asked this question in the housing office the other week because someone said you werent allowed more than three cats she said there isnt a limit as such but obviously if the pets are causing a nuisance and people complain they would have to investigate and as my o/h lives in a flat the as long as everyone in the block doesnt object applies i think ?
