I still think the idea for it to be all black glass, like the monolith from 2001, was the best idea.

The big unit on the ground floor of St Paul's Q Park (which was originally intended to be a casino) has an Under Offer sign in the window fronting Arundel Gate. Any idea what/who's moving in?

I saw this and had a look at the planning portal but couldn't find anything. It would be better if you could search for an address on there and it tell you the history of all the planning applications.

To be fair the area has been significantly improved, don't forget the tower isn't completely finished yet.

Once its finished it'll look really good.

I quite agree, though I do like the public space in particular the winter Gardens, for me, the tower is awful and a really blight on the landscape. I don't think much to the first office block opposite the Hotel either.

It looks average at best.

Could so easily have been spectacular.

I can see this building from my kitchen window (S8 area), and also walk past it a few times a week. It's a big rectangular brown box with little or no redeeming features.
They've also changed the internal features of many of the apartments, leading to a workmate of mine being able to cancel his purchase of a unit, which, as he was going to be buying an apartment at a price which is now much higher than it's value, he jumped at.

The fact that the eyesore is clad in brown seems quite apt.

Similar (brown substance) thoughts come to mind whenever I have the misfortune of seeing it.

Hand it to the planners and the 'yes' men in office. They've managed to find something even more bland (and ugly) than Number 1 St. Paul's (which in itself, must have taken some doing).

wait for the problems to arise when the temperature rises. Now in the winter-time they are installing and setting out to grid and datum.
Because of the dark colour used this will absorb the suns energy like a giant sponge.the building has allowances for expansion dut i bet there will be problems late on in the year.

Sounds promising.

So it could come down yet, then?

Does anybody know whats going on with this development. Rumour is that nobody can complete their purchase because of a legal dispute involving the liquidators and there are a lot of people who bought offplan in 2007 who cant afford to complete - see article in The Times today.

swordfish1, thank you for posting this tidbit of information. As someone also involved in this development - and someone who has also had major changes made to their aparment without a by-your-leave, I also want to consider my options.

I'm not saying I would definitely like to get out, but I want to understand what paths are open to me.

Can I ask (possibly via PM?) whether your workmate managed to remove himself from this development and recover his deposit, whether that was based on just minor interior changes or large layout changes (like has happened to me) and how he went about it - of most importance is the fact of whether he was forced to sign a confidentiality agreement to stop him talking to anyone else involved in this?

Hope that maybe you can be of some help.

Hippo

I can see the tower from where I live. It reminds me of a pair of horrible brown corduroy trousers I wore in the 1970's.

If they'd clad it in black then it wouldn't be such an eyesore. Its been built ugly.

I wrote elsewhere...

It's not as good as it could have been.
It's not as bad as it could have been.

If they stuck with the cheapo plans they had mid-2008 we'd be really upset.

Isn't this where Gatecrasher are proposing to re-open?

My tuppen'orth? It's an incredibly ugly, bland design that will surely repeat the architectural mistakes of the 60's & 70's (Moor, Park Hill etc. etc.)

If they had to have a plain, rectangular box (and I suppose with maximising floor space, they did) why the hell/who the hell chose that God-awful cladding?

Not the best picture I could find but this is the Bioincubator on Brook Hill roundabout. An imaginative use of varying patterns and colours that succeeds in 'breaking up' otherwise rectangular shapes. Even here, the over-doing of the verdigris panelling (sure to make people look back and say 'Oh, look! The noughties!') should have been avoided. It's everywhere! Copthorne/Jury's Inn Hotels, top end of Broad Lane etc. etc.

The Cheesegrater? Not to my own taste but a genuine attempt to break the mould. Velocity? Brilliant! The other multi-storey car park near the new Fire Station? A brown and green camoulflage monstrosity that was chucked up in 3 months.

While it's good to have differing opinions about architecture, some of the stuff going up is dire.

The words 'palms', 'greased', 'back' and 'handers' spring to mind.
