Why do guys spit in public urinals when spending a penny?

I have heard this strange phenomenon, when i spend a penny. A lot of guys spit into the urinal and wondered whether it was a territory thing (like marking their territory or an insult thing.)
I have also noticed this when walking past guys and it happens a lot then - they will spit on the ground close to you, whilst walking past you.
I find that i do not need to spit very often and definately not when in public, so is it an insult thing and or territory thing.
Any clues to my awareness most helpful!

Isn't there a £25 fine for spitting in the street? So maybe they're taking advantage of doing two things at the same time and saving a fortune in fines

I have never heard of it to be honest. However my big brother told me that the correct edict when having a pee in a public loo is to look to the person next to you and give him a wink of the eye. I will be sure to try this the next time.

I usually do it on a night out, especially after having Vodka... The after taste is not nice!

I can't understand why anyone needs to spit in general - it spreads germs and was outlawed in public in places like France many, many years ago to battle against things like TB.
Walk around Paris and you will see "Défense de cracher" written on the pavements.
Sporting "stars" are often seen as spitting, so I guess there's the power of role models for you but when I was busting a gut playing coarse 2nd and 3rd team rugby I can honestly say that the only time I ever spat was when I had a mouthful of blood (well, it felt like it!)
Every other time, I just swallowed!

We can spit when and where your not looking, else we can spit in a urinal or toilet.

Believe it or not there is an old superstition regarding spitting into your urine. Apparently it can cast out 'evil spirits'. I kid you not.

i have always thought its a "im hard dont mess we me" sort a thing, teritory or sumat, its seems to happen most in pubs, alcohol mite play a part, a might be wrong who knows

That's what i interpret it as or as "Goon" has said, it might be a casting out spirits thing.
It definately happens alot in pubs - see if you notice next time!
