I was recently told my one of my friends that you can go to a certain bar on Ecclesall Road on Tuesday nights and if your are a woman you get drinks for £1 whereas men have to pay the full amount?

I was shocked that this is legal and I believe its just another sign of how Men are being discriminated against time after time but stay quiet about it?

Does anyone know of any law that would prevent them from doing this or are you allowed to charge someone less for the same product just because of their gender?

It would be interesting to see what would happen if they charged different prices based on ethnic background/age etc

I didnt want to mention the bar's name incase i broke forum rules and was unsure of the rules but I will add the name of the bar if anyone can also clear that up for me?

My bold. So, gay people pay less for drinks? I'm on the wrong side here!

Its been long standing practise for clubs and pubs to offer free entry to females so no surprise they offer them cheaper drinks.

neither to be honest - although the types of bars and pubs i have worked in would not offer such promotions (they didnt do any!) so i was not aware of such deals ... i just wonder what would happen if they had a price list like:

White People £1.50
Black People £1
Chinese People £0.80

or

18-21yrs old £1.50
22-30yrs old £1
30+yrs old £2

or

Straight People £1.50
Gay People £1
Bi-Sexual £0.80

there would be an absolute uproar, and rightly so

Yep blatant sexism - but when you're out on the trawl it doesn;t matter. If the drinks are cheap and you pull it could be a cheap night 'cos she's half cut anyway. Similarly with the "old" night clubs meet them inside and you've saved.
Women attract the men - cheap drinks/entry attract the women.

There would be no significant benefit for any inducements based on colour or race or even sexuality imho.

I would say that as a man i'm probably slightly aggrieved at this but then again i'm tight fisted. But as a bloke on the pull i wouldn't care one jot - legal or not. We have ladies days everywhere but very very rarely a men only event.

It is illegal under the 1975 Sexual Discrimination act.........It would relate directly in this case to the supply of goods and provisions.

Sex Discrimination Act 1975
The Sex Discrimination Act 1975 (SDA) makes it unlawful to discriminate on grounds of sex.

Direct sex discrimination occurs when a person of one sex is treated less favourably on grounds of sex than a person of the other sex would have been treated in the same circumstances.

Also should you complain to the bar that is operating this procedure and they deny you the same rights they break the law twice as you cannot be victimised for excercising your rights under the act....

The third type of discrimination covered by the Act is victimization. This occurs when an individual is discriminated against because they have exercised their rights under the Act.

If it bothers you so much report it to Trading standards....

Consumer Advice is now available on the Consumer Direct website or by telephoning 0845 404 0506 (local rate). Sheffield Trading Standards will continue to deal with any written queries you may have. Our address is:

Ladies only gyms, ladies only swimming sessions, ladies' day at race meetings, ladies only allowed to run in Run For Life events.

Sexism is alive and kicking.

I'm thinking the demand for ladies only swimming and gym sessions is the desiret o work out without some bloke watching your arse on the treadmill. I work in a gym, yes it does happen, a lot....

And considering we only have been 'alowed' in pubs on our own without getting stoned to death for the past 20 years I think you should get over it.

So sexism against women is wrong, but men have to get over it?
Get real

I think it is against the law, but in this particular case get a woman to buy all the drinks. and see if the server landlord/landlady tries to charge differently for the same drinks in a round. Fine a lady send her for the drinks all night. Happy days cheap drinks and waitress service.

Cheap entry ladies night (meant with no possible pun) have been around as long as I've been going out. Willman and Gordonbennett save me typing the rest on the reasons why. It's obvious. And if I owned a [club type] bar or club, I'd want as many women in as possible, for the same reasons. A club full of men won't attract women, but a club full of women will attract men. (apart from perhaps bars specifically aimed at the non hetro market)

I can't remember ever seeing Ladies getting a similar round in as the next man, and getting it cheaper. Unless it's done with some form of 'voucher' way of doing it, which can easily be done.

Price lists are like that everywhere, if you adjust the age ranges slightly.

I've never seen uproar on a bus when a pensioner or a child gets a cheaper ride.

James points out earlier that it is. Is there any point in getting het up about it?. If it was enforced, and it was my establishment, I would simply ask my ticketers to only give vouchers to women, unless a bloke asks for them.

The simplest way to get around this is make it drink specific offers not just for ladies.

I.E. White Zinfandel/Rose £1
Cosmopolitan £2
Martini and Lemonade £1
etc etc

It isn't the bars fault that the majority of these drinks aren't very popular with men! If they want to order one they can, but I doubt I will see 6 lads in the said bar standing round with Rose and Martini trying to pick up women!

Problem solved........

This really is the main thing for me. Women didn't get the vote by sitting around going OH GOD ITS SO UNFAIR.

If you really feel strongly about something, organise, campaign, change.

I dont think it would take much for the government to change the law, they seem to change it every ten minutes for much more minor things.
