Hi, I need to ask for your help/advice!
My daughters PC has gone belly up (my fault I believe!)
I tried to format it yesterday, and about half way through, it froze and didn't/wouldn't do anything.
I turned it off and rebooted it, then after it re-booted (using a Boot Disk on floppy), it said it had no FAT 32 Partion and needed to be re-partioned.
So I used FDisk on the floppy to try to re-partion it, and it came up as having "no fixed drives".
I tried to re-format again, but drive C was an "invalid drive specified".
So I think I may have inadvertently killed it!
Have you any ideas or suggestions that may help to try and ressurect it (apart from trying to get another hard drive or PC!) as she's not happy with me and i'm currently in the dog house!
(Its only an old PC, RUNNING 98se, was going to put ME on!)
If you need any more info, please post or pm me!!
HEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!

As far as I know, you can't irreparably damage a hard drive just by formatting it. So I wouldn't worry about that. Check the hard drive's connected okay. Have you changed anything in the BIOS?
I'm pretty rusty at HDD meddling, so if anyone's got any bright ideas, jump in

Unfortunately as the PC came from school, (they;ve upgraded and so were getting rid of the old ones) I cant get inti bios, and CMOS requires a password, and I have no idea what it is and no one seems to know, so thats buggered that idea!!
Thanks tho................

you can reset the CMOS, open the computer up and there should be a round battery somewhere on the board, next to that will be a little (usually blue) Jumper, move that across to the middle and open pin, count to 5, then move it back to where it is... then try the BIOS again.

PW = PowerSwitch (or DC SW)
H+/H- = H.D.D LED (With Coloured to H+)
P+/P-/P- = PowerLed (With Colour to P+)
Remember, HDD LED Should be on the Vertical axis |
PowerLED is on the top row (Horizontal _ )
and PowerSwitch (DC SW) is on the bottom row below Power LED (Horizontal _ )

Millions of thanks to Ghozer The God.
Right, thats that bit.
Ok, its booted up. Now the scrren is saying "CMOS Settings Wrong"
Press F1 to Run SETUP
Press F2 to load default values and continue.
pressing either asks for a password.
(moving "blue" pin didn't seem to work!) so I carry on regardless.
this bits next:

replace the disk and then press any key.
In the immortal words of Homer J Simpson- "Where's the ANY key!!?
Right sorted that bit (ide lead in wrong slot!)
Now THIS BIT:-

Remove battery and leave out for a bit
Not sure on time but if needed I usually make and drink a cup of coffee before replacing battery

It looks like either the cable is not pushed in right as it is not being recognized (easy to do if you've been furtling with it)or either of the cable is faulty or the HD
First I'd try pushing in the cable

I hope you switched the jumper, and then put it back where it was... powering on your PC with the jumper on the 'clear' position could permanantly damage your PC..
Either way, battery out for 30 mins or so should do the trick
as for the ATAPI incompatable message, It does sound like the person said above, the cable has been knocked, or the power has been pulled out or something..
That's usually your CD/DVD Drive (Primary Slave) like it says at the top.
it could also be that your hard drive is faulty, since it doesn't look like it's been detected (all the others say "Not Detected") and your hard drive should be on Pri Master (Primary Master)
Check all cables are plugged in properly

Aaaah, ok, fair enough
try this one... the image you posted earlier ( http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/7099/boardv.jpg ) - there's a blue jumper on that image (to the left)
Move that one to the other pins and count to 10 and move it back..
(there should be 3 pins. it will be on 1 and 2 at the moment, put it on 2 and 3, count to 10 and move it back to 1 and 2)
"O O -" move to "- O O"
Count to 10 move back to
"O O -"
( Seems that you'r reset jumper is by the BIOS chip, not the battery)

Ghozer in the second picture it shows BIOS but the Pri Master is 'Not Detected) which points to either HDD cable problem or HDD itself faulty

Yeah I know, but the original post was how to reset the bios (which was aparantly passworded) hence the bios jumper...

Right, its found the CD Rom, gone to D to setup new version of windows, this appears:
http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/2752/screenmkc.jpg
ran Fdisk (yet again!!) and still "No fixed disks present"
Must be a shagged H/D, but it seemed ok yesterday, then whilst formatting, just died half way through!

If it died half way through formatting, it does sound like a dead HDD...
I can take a look if you want, drop me a PM and i'll be in touch tomorrow...
