The Pirate Bay is dead so it seems, Their site is no longer accessible.. So what happened to the internet offering freedom of information ? There are obviously going to be posters on here that scorn P2P sites because they either dissagree with free sites to download software or applications as they pay for their downloads via a P2P server and there are going to be the "right on" brigade that say that we should all purchase "legal" licenced software from the original source. Not all of us can afford to buy the software that we need / want, some of us are students trying to get by on grants etc.. and sites like The pirate bay have saved us hundreds of pounds that can be spent on food and (Beer.. cough cough) other needy items... If you needed a cup of sugar you would expect your friends to help you out, not have to go to the local supermarket or contact Tate and Lyle ? Hands up who hasn't had a copy of a video or dvd or software ! Form an orderly queue please...

Just had a look and it's business as usual.
As for the recent court case... this was against the guys running the site, not the actual site itself, so i wouldn't expect the site to be going anywhere soon, much to the dismay of the cash hungry execs.
The appeal itself could take years to get sorted.

Freedom of information is different from the freedom to offer someone else's information for free.

Good riddance to The Pirate Bay.

The 'cup of sugar' analogy makes no sense. With a cup of sugar your friend has paid for it, and then deprived themselves of some of it so you can have it. The only way the analogy would work is if you download part of a piece of software, or 1 track off an album, and the uploader loses their access to that piece forever until they go out and buy more :/

Don't go making excuses like "not all of us can afford to buy software we need / want", that is like saying "I can't afford a car so I'll just nick someone elses!" If you can't afford it, then go without or find alternates.

I'm not going all "holier than thou" on you, just wish people would stop trying to defend piracy and illegal downloads by making it out that they are the victims and thus deserve to get the items for free. Simply put you are an illegal downloader - accept it and stop trying to justify your actions.

As for me, I happen to watch TV shows before they are aired in the UK....so, yes, I download stuff I shouldn't, but I make no excuses for it except I want to see them faster.

A quick reminder here. Sheffield Forum is NOT the place to promote sites or services which enable copyright violation.

Trying to use SF as a way of promoting p2p file sharing is likely to result in your account being suspended, so please have the sense not to do it.

Your personal morals on sharing copyright material are not important here. We have forum rules to uphold and that's what we'll do, so take it elsewhere please.

I normally have a little sympathy for copyright holders, but not much.

If they want to look like the victims, they should stop acting like the money grabbing so and sos that they are.

Yes, it's awful that their work is being allegedly "stolen", but then they start demanding that we aren't allowed to copy songs from CDs to use in MP3 players, or copy DVDs to a portable device. Instead we must purchase a separate copy for each device that we own.

When that happens, that little bit of sympathy I had quickly disappears.
