A gripe about Castlegate:

Why are there no bins on Castlegate? There is rubbish all over it and no bin!!

Why are there no pedestrian traffic lights at the end of Castlegate? Crossing that road towards the law courts with traffic coming from Castlegate and from the markets is a recipe for a diaster! The amount of people I see crossing that road and have to dogde taxis, buses etc....is ridiculous!!!
Sort it out Sheffield!!!

I took a wander around when I was waiting for the boardwalk to open its doors the other night. I used to spend time in the area about 10 years ago when I worked that end of town. Depressing. The building where BHS used to be must have been empty for ever. The whole area needs more than a quick revamp. They were saying on the radio that castle house has got listed so maybe a developer would be less interested.

Hear Hear , and why are black cabs allowed to partially block the road at the side of the co op causing problems for traffic and pedestrians. That whole area needs sorting.

Castlegate? Hasn't that got crossings at both ends (Exchange place/Bridge Street)? And no reason for folk to want to cross it anywhere else?

I would image that the scum who chuck their litter down simply because nobody's provided them with a bin right next to them would be too much of a scumbag to use a bin if it was there.

The bit that confuses these dirty gits is the bit whereby they have to either take their crap and find a bin, or take it home with them. Sad really, because they have no problem searching out a bargain and carrying that home. We ought to be grateful that they don't drag their idle arses out into the countryside very often, because there's no bins out there.

It could be good though, the miner is an amazing bit of street art, but not really in an area where you get to appreciate it.

Take it you haven't been to it lately and seen the improvements that have been made. People really need to open their eyes when going round town because there are some really great buildings and stuff. Take a look at the councils website and see the plans for the city centre, they are amazing and when its done, it will be 100 times better than it is now. Yeah the moor is looking shabby, and the area around the markets too, but builders have started to move into the moor already for redevelopment. EVERY other city is also full of empty retail units where companies are going under.

As for drunks and yobs, Im in Sheffield regularly, and having worked up and down the country on a regular basis too, every city has its fair share of the lower end of society.

There is no crossing at the Wicker end, where you can either turn left to the markets, right for the Wicker or straight on to Snig HIll and the Courts.

These are streets, not corridors and the OP was moaning about the lack of bins on Castlegate, not Haymarket or Waingate.

Sadly, the plans to build more ugly building do not involve improving thoroughfares and urban equipment such as bins. Even if they did put some, Council's incapable of getting someone to do rounds and empty them.

I agree but unfortunately I have to walk this way to work!

I choose the long way round across the law courts as I cut through the markets twice one week and I have never seen such scroats, 2 girls were having a fight pulling each others hair out. Some nasty process food scoffing girl with a big belly and a pram with a grubby kid in barged into me, and all I could smell was weed. It was so vile, I could not believe it. Total trash ville, I even took my ipod off as some nasty manor kid wearing a tracksuit and hat with a fag in his mouth looked at it.

Not on Castlegate though and that is were I was walking looking at all the litter! As if the scroats would carry their rubbish to another street! They don't, they throw it on the floor as no-one has ever edcuated them to not drop litter. They don't care because they have no standards.

The crossings, and the bins next to the bus stops, must have gone then. They're there on Google Streetview.

Yes I think the area was redone. I am talking about the LadysBridge end.

The ones you mean are traffic lights, not predestrain ones. You can't stop the traffic to cross there.

But the kerbs are lowered and you can wait for the flow to stop. There's even an island. Not exactly a problem?

Why don't you go down there at 5pm, and try and cross the road, see for yourself what it is like? Lowered kerbs mean bugger all! There are buses and taxi around all over and no pedestrian crossing. Talk a walk down, you'll see what I mean!
