Quite possibly

I've noticed an increase in Smitch's hair loss now it's getting warmer but she tends to lose her fur everywhere anyway...

If she does, just get a good stripping comb and comb out the dead coat - then she won't leave quite so much of it all over the house

Chico didn't loose his fur until he was about one. Best thing to do is keep brushing your cat. Then you won't have to do what I do; wait until Chico is asleep and then cut his knots out!!
