HI all,

This thread is just a little thank you to who ever handed in the £50 pound i lost in ASDA Cappletown last tuesday. I never in a million years thought i would get it back, but guess what rang them thursday and i was told they had it. How great it that.

Question is would you hand money in if you found it? (not sure if i would.)

Yes, and I have done so in the past.

20 odd years ago I found an empty wallet in Hillsborough, and went all the way to Hammerton Road Police Station to hand it in.

No I would probably not hand it in (but I would feel guilty for not).

How the hell did you manage to lose £50 anyway?

Rich, the OP asks if you found "money".

If I am honest, it depends upon the amount and where.

If I find up to £20 in the street with no identifiable 'dropper', I would quite happlily pocket it.
... maybe up to £50 as well, but this has never happened to me, yet.

£10 or more in a shop, or similar, I would ask if anyone had reported it lost and leave my name and address.

I wouldn't physically hand it in.

I found a £50 pound note in the street. I pocketed it cos don't trust the police enough. Finding something on a public footpath isn't classed as stealing is it cos officially all money belongs to the queen.. no? What would the police do if handed in? Would they keep it for a bit then give you a ring? How would someone claim it? wouldn't it be too easy to wander into a police station to see if any unclaimed momney was there?

I would do this too.

If no one claimed it within a reasonable length of time, I would donate it to charity.

I tend to keep the pound coins and fivers I find in the street, but I once found over a thousand pounds in B&Q years ago - I handed it in, met the woman who lost it and she couldn't even be bothered to make eye contact, or thank me! For several years I thought it'd make me think twice, but that was many years ago and if I found a big amount I would still give it back...

I don't understand,You lost £50 and someone handed it in and made your day,But despite knowing how good it made you feel and showing you that there are good people out there your not sure you would do the same?

I have no idea how i lost it, i popped it in the side pocket of my bag with my mobile phone. i did get my phone out whilst walking round asda and got to the till it was not there. had a look at the place were i got my phone out and couldnt see it. i thought i had no chance at getting it back. i am told its a member of staff that found it, not the general public. although i was over the moon and couldnt believe they had it im still not sure i would hand it in , as horrible as it sounds.

I love how you justify your dishonesty by calling into question someone elses honesty! And finding something is stealing.

I think you'll find that "finders keepers, losers weepers" is actually applicable in law.

Not the brightest bulb in the house are we?

Why don't you trust the Police? have you heard somewhere that they are a secret masonic order that have a hoard of 'found' money and treasure somewhere in a deep dark vault?

Why don't you go down to your local nik and see if they just randomly hand out found money and items to any one that walks in claiming they have dropped a tenner?

Doughnut !!!

I'd agree...

If I found just money in the street and it wasn't a massive amount, ie over £500 I think I'd pocket it.

If it was with something that contained evidence of ownership then maybe I'd try to contact the owner or the Police.

When I first found it I didn't know the wallet was empty.. I would've still handed it in even if it had had money in it, cos I'm honest like that you see! *ouch! My Halo slipped!*

General rule - cash you keep, personal belongings (cards/jewellery etc.) you take to a police station.

If you hand in cash at a shop, 95% of the time the staff will pocket it as soon as your back is turned (based on personal experience of working in shops).

Remember anything that you hand in to the police station that is unclaimed after 6 months legally becomes yours.

My mate once found £300 in an envelope in some dodgy pub in Manchester. He took it and never went back to that part of town again!
