Can anyone help me? We live in a middle terraced house and one side occupied but the other side is owned but unoccupied and the gardens, front and back are a complete disgrace. We have tried to get in touch with them without any joy. We have attached notes to his fence asking him to get in touch with us so we can discuss this with him, but nothing. I have been in touch with the council but they don;t want to know!! as it is privately owned. The only other concern i have is if anything happens inside the house and it damages ours how do we go about claiming etc?

PLEASE HELP!!! Any advice appreciated

i tried saying that i had seen rodents and they said they would have to send a person round to see if its that what is causing the investation. We are under Chesterfield Council not Sheffield, the only other solution they said was to get in touch with a solicitor!! Why should i pay?

Why shouldn't you pay? How does the fact that the next door property is unoccupied affect you and why does it bother you so much?

If it is just the garden is it really likely to cause damage to your property? The council do have powers to force home owners to clean up their gardens if they are full of rubbish but I'd doubt they'd do it for an overgrown one.

This tells you about the powers councils have:

Whether you can force them to take action is another matter. From what I've heard from friends in the area, Chesterfield council are fairly bad.

Maybe the owner has died or just forgotten about it or something? Its certainly worth investigating although no idea how you would do this.. Someone might be able to pick up a real bargain!

You could always tidy next doors garden up yourself if it bothers you that much.

It's no wonder councils treat people like kids when people ring them up wanting wetnursing.

find out who owns at the land registry, then try to contact them, move into the house and live there for 10 years and it then LEGALLY becomes yours....sorted

You can download the title register here (for a £3 fee):
http://www.landregistry.gov.uk/www/w...zhIMzZUQzMwRzI!
It will contain the address of the registered owner and the mortgage company if mortgaged. They might not be happy if the house is being left to go derelict (if that is the problem, rather than just the garden).

I didn;t mean the state of the garden would damage my property i meant if anything happens inside the house(burst pipes etc)

Maybe because the poster has said that the back and front gardens are a disgrace? If the owners kept the gardens tidy it would be seen as actually caring about the property, if they are trying to let the house it is not a very good first impression is it.

exactly, next door but one are trying to sell there house and it looks a complete mess for them as well. We joined to them so it concerns me more, although alot of people on the street are complaining about it as well they don;t seem to be doing anything about it. I think they think because its my neighbour it upto me!!

How long has it been empty? U never known anyone to have lived there? TBH I can see his point of view, things like this will have an affect on the value of his property, people won't want to live next to a dump will they?

he lived there for a bout 8 months at the most then his girlfriend got a council house exchange and he lives with her. We saw him at xmas for about 5 minutes and he said he would tidy it up but we haven;t seen him since. I don;t think he works and we have been told that the house is owned by his brother, so his brother is letting him stay there and probably getting his rent paid for (social) so his mortgage is being paid as well and he lives with the girlfriend in a council house getting paid for as well i expect

Ah - so it's not really about an unoccupied house, is it? Sounds like you just want to have a bit of a whinge about people on benefits and make assumptions based purely on your prejudices.
