Almost 10 years ago now my grandad passed away and left me over 1000 vinyl records (i believe the figure is around 1800 records but ive not counted).
There are around 200 Elvis Presley records in the collection, a few of which i know from him telling me when he was alive, are (were) worth in the ballpark of 50-100 pounds each.
I was wondering if anyone knows anyway i can get the whole collection valued? Or maybe just the Elvis collection.
I dont think im looking to sell due to them having more sentimental value to me, but i would be interested in finding out what theyre worth. Either as a complete collection or finding out whether ive got any particular records worth a bob or two!
Also, i always thought records would only go up in value, but someone told me the other day that you have to watch them as they are starting to depreciate.
Does anyone in the know about vinyl have any suggestions? I dont want to hold on to them for 30 years and sell them when theyre worth peanuts if i can sell them sooner for a good price. But like i said, they have extreme sentimental value, so if i did sell it would only be if theyre worth a lot. And id have to consider when would be the right time to sell.
Anyway im blabbering on now with useless info... if anyone has any advice/help id be grateful to hear from you!

Hi!
What other records have you got? I'm no Elvis fan but i'm a big jazz, psych and prog head! Hit me up with a small list!
I'd definetly take a look at the Record Collector book, but Gemm may be a good reference for getting a price on US records.
Don't use Ebay because it's unpredictable as hell!

hi, thanks for the reply!
i think the majority of the records are rock n roll or country based, from the 60s 70s early 80s kind of thing. he wasnt a fan of jazz, psych or prog (although im a big prog fan!), so theres very little, if any, evidence of any records of those genres in the collection.

This might be of interest, especially as it says
"The event runs from 10am to 3pm and will feature a valuation service for people wishing to have single items or full collections appraised."

I think vinyl popularity is on the rise right now, at least I know quite a few people who have recently bought record players (me included). I doubt they will be going down in value if they are in good condition and with over 200 Elvis records you could have one or two of those worth 200-300 alone (there are some selling on ebay.com for $750 which is around £550 right now I think)

I have some really old records, even predating 78s
They still have their paper sleeves and the price - 3d (not sure how that converts to decimal!)
One, which I have played made me laugh. It was Boo boo boo, here comes the Loch Ness Monster.
I think they are probably from around 1930s but have no idea if they have any value, or where to find out.

Seeing this reminds me I have a load of old 78s in their covers in the loft I think.

Whatever you do don't take any of 'em to Jack's Records! He'll give you pennies for them, rather than an honest price.
I took a box set called Sub Pop 200 there a couple of years back. It featured early works by Nirvana, Mudhoney, Soundgarden and loads of other Sub Pop bands. Mint condition, only played once from new. He gave me I think, £8.
Later on I found out that they go for £150-200 in good condition! What a crook!

I'm in the same boat, have a lot of vinyl and CDs my dad left, just about all of them jazz (but big band rather than the later Charlie Parker type stuff) - if anyone as advice about this genre and their value I am looking to sell most, am sure my dad wouldn't mind the money helping my kids through uni...

Have a look on this site - it stores the value that rare records have gone for on Ebay. You can search for artist/title/whatever. This gives you the 'true' ebay value, rather than what a record guide (often out of date), or record dealer (obviously low!) would tell you:

£1 = 240d
Your 3d = just over 1p (2.4d)

Get in Touch with Sothebys or any of the other London auction houses, they have experts in all aspects of collecting. Take photos of the ones that you think are worth money and send them along, also try to give account of the others that you have and they will advise you on the outcome. Hope this helps
