My 7 month old Cavalier has, this week began to hump everything in sight. Ok he is a dog. He has also started to wee during the night which he hasn't done for months. Ok no major issue. This morning however, I have found he has weed up the side of his own bed. Now surely that's not normal?
My mum looked after him for the wkend at her house and she has a new puppy, could this have anything to do with it?

Couple of things, your dog is starting to hump and scent mark as he has found his testosterone dogs reach sexual maturity at around 5-6months depending on breed size, larger dogs may take longer as they develop slower.
You need to clean his bed with an odour killer specifically for dogs (Safe4 is good) or you can use biological washing powder. Normal washing in a machine will not kill the smell and he will continue to mark there whilst he can smell urine.

Can I ask, is the humping normal? Zach doesn't pee in the house, but he does try to hump his soft bed at night, and humps his duck ragged most evenings.
That said, he doesn't look like he's really doing the dirty (he's 7 months), just kinda going through the motions. Maybe it feels nice.
I really don't want to neuter him unless I absolutely have to...

My old springer used to hump everything in sight, including his own sleeping bag / bed. The kids used to tell me the dog had wee'd all over the kitchen floor but no, that was NOT wee...
I had him neutered, he came home from the vets with sore bits n stitches, and straight away tried to hump the bed again. I took it off him for a couple of days until his hormones died down, and he was fine after that.

Yes, humping is a perfectly normal activity... (unfortunately) thing is, at 6/7 months or so, he's the doggy equivalent of a spotty, hormonal (randy) teenager.
If you aren't planning to breed from him, simple answer... have him "doctored", ASAP - its kinder, it's healthier, and makes for a happier longer-lived animal.

Thanks for the replies guys, I have cleaned his bed again, this time as suggested and spoken to the vet. They have said they don't like to 'do' them till they are 12 months, not sure why but will hang on and and keep cleaning till then!!! Oh, and I'm now wondering if he had actully peed on his bed. Gross.

I have looked after dogs who have been neuted before the age of 12 months so maybe check that out with another vet.

my dogs weres done WELL before 12 months, certainly!
my current pup, (the destruct-o-pup) was done before she even had her first season, at 6 1/2 months. any time from six months is fine ( except in the case of a female, if she is in season:- then you have to wait till she has come out of season)

Vets thet wont neuter until 12 months are few and far between. Most vets neuter as soon as the testicles drop, which can be anything between 5 - 8 months depending on the breed.
If you want your dog done now, then there are plenty of vets around who will neuter for you.

Wierd, most vets will neutrer anytime after 6-8 months with males and females as this is around the time when the hormonal changes kick in. If you leave it another 6 months the scent marking may be difficult to get him out of the habbit-I agree with Teeny you need to see another vet.

Absolutely agree - find another vet, before the humping/marking becomes too habitual!
