There have been reports of black cabs charging fare plus a half when working for Private Hire firms' bookings, but legally they should always engage the taxi meter and "never" charge more than the price displayed on the face of the meter.
As has already been said it's £2 more than the normal fare till 6am Saturday Morning and the same extra fare for NewYears eve and New years Day till 6am on the 2nd of January.......I believe.

Quote:
Each hiring begun between 6.00 pm on 24th Decembe.......................£2
and 6.00 am on 27th December and between
6.00 pm on 31st December and 6.00 am on 2nd January
The private Hire firms set their own tariffs and most are charging fare plus one half but no one is charging double officially but, some have.

We used city taxis last night to town and were charged time and a half. We got a black cab on the way back and it was £2 extra. So were the private cabs ripping us off according to the council tarrifs on the website?

No they are just getting paid extra for working on a bank holiday when they could be home with their family!

What I don't understand though, is that muslims don't celebrate christmas, not assuming that all cab drivers are muslim btw, so to them surely its just another day.

can't really expect muslim drivers to charge less than christian drivers .
personal opinion is charges should be the same as any other day and if they don't like it don't work . they make extra money anyway due to the fact it's the busiest days of the year .

Which is the busiest day of the year? Christmas Eve? Christmas day? Boxing Day? New Years day?

They are all much quieter than normal days. Plus they lose the 2 weekends that follow them so it's offset by them as well. Town will be quiet tonight as it was last night, as will next Friday and Saturday.

New Years Eve is the exception when it will be busy. The busiest day of the year is generally the last Thursday/Friday/Saturday* before Christmas. (when it's single fare)

(*dependant on when the actutally C-Day falls).

My bold - I think that PHV's should charge £2 extra as with cabs. They lost out on at least 4 journeys over the festive period, when I walked a journey that I would normal laze out of.

but yet when it's nomal fare they charge private hire fares...i.e. on milage
and not on the meter, my argument is the black cabs shouldn't be on PRIVATE
HIRE firms, when they get a booked job, and they are on there way to the job, if they get a flag down they do the flag down and dont bother with the
booked job. get black cabs off private hire firms or put a limit on the number
of private hire plates in the city, like black cabs have 830 and private hire
is unlimited....

what i want to know is why there is an extra charge at all on christmas eve or new years eve before midnight because the eves are not bank holidays. yes extra charges on christmas day and new years day and boxing day because these are offically bank holidays, but on the eves the charges shouldnt be happening i dont think.

If the 'eve's are just normal days, why do the bus services stop between 6 and 7?
