The PS3 has built in wireless.. or you can use ethernet, if you use the ethernet cable simply attach it to the spare port (if any) in your router.
Setting up wireless was a doddle. you will need the appropiate number from the back (usually) of your wireless router, simply key it in when asked.. and as if by magic..its there !!

Plug ethernet cable into ps3 from the modem haha?
Failing that u cant set up ps3 to locate the router.

There's built in Wi-fi for it to receive a wi-fi signal from a wireless router/access point so you still need a wireless router if that's the route you want to go down
As already said you could plug the cable straight into the modem but I wouldn't advise that...even a wired router isn't expensive

You need to plug your internet connection into a wireless router (that you have setup securlely with passwords and encryption) Then use the inbuilt wifi in the PS3 to detect your router and connect to the net that way

This is a tad confusing...
You have internet in your house, but can't work out how to plug your PS3 to the laptop to acces it?
Please clarify - what type of internet service does your house have? Is it a broadband line? Are you actually running a mobile broadband service on your laptop, whereby you were given a USB plug-in which you slot into your laptop to get online? Who is the service provider for the internet, and what equipment did they provide you with to connect up?

You do NOT need to have you laptop connected to allow your PS3 to communicate with online games or the net!!
I assume you have a router.. now the router is what talks to the internet, in order for your laptop or any other equipment to connect to the internet it must first have a connection to your router .. you can do this two ways on the PS3
1) connect by ethernet cable.. this is a pyisical cable that goes from the back of the PS3 to your router
2) By wireless connection, this connects to your router by wirless and does not require a cable between your PS3 and Router (Modem)
Read the onscreen instructions when connecting the PS3 to your Router (it does NOT need your laptop in any shape or form) , theres also a good quick guide comes with the PS3 and is relataively easy to follow.
If in doubt ask someone who has done this kind of thing before, cinfusing at first perhaps but once done is very easy.

Cool - not sure why you need to hold in a button to set it up. So long as you have the router password details you should be able to get the PS3 to detect the wireless network itself. In the settings bar go to network settings and choose Internet Connection Settings. If you select Easy it will auto scan for whether you have a wired or wireless network. If you choose 'custom' you can select it all yourself.
What make of modem is it?

your password, called ''wireless key'' should be printed on the back/underside of your router

Who's your ISP? If it's AOL you're stuffed, they don't support online console gaming,
