I often wonder who co-ordinates the printing of road signs around Sheffield, and why there are some roads with two differently written names on the signs.
The ones that spring to mind are Meadow Head, which also has a sign reading Meadowhead, Haigh Moor/Haighmoor in Richmond, and Sunny Vale/Sunnyvale in Totley.
Are there more? Does it matter? Should I consider a hobby to take my mind off this?

I've heard it said that 'Low Edges' signs were originally meant to read 'Low Hedges', but the 'H' got dropped in colloquial deference.

I lived in Derbyshire near Bakewell for a bit and there was one sign for Youlgreave and another for Youlgrave both referring to that same place is that what you mean?

names and spellings? we should remember the masses didn't read and write just a few centuries ago and it was left to the clergy and the squires and a few others to jot down stuff.
Therefore names were passed down for centuries by word of mouth, chinese whispers style and if 5 different writers were asked to keep a record, a map or draw up deeds, they could possibly spell the same thing 5 different ways
It was only when the post office were founded that actually naming roads became important and then there would be conflict over which spelling to adopt, A road that might run between 2 or more parishes could have more than one name or spelling.. a good example is London Road and Chesterfield road. Both names describe where it leads to.. if you were a long distance traveller, it would be london road and if your needs were more local, it would be Chesterfield road. When a true name was required for admin and post, the bit in heeley was called London Road and the bit in Deryshire (as was) - would be chesterfield road. Its the same road going to both places - albeit eventually in a time of horse travel and no motorways, ring roads or by passes

London Road (South) and Chesterfield road are the same road but two different stretches, they don't overlap. The change is at the junction with Albert Road. I don't think it is strange or abnormal for a road to change name, it's certainly weird when the same stretch of road has two names though; due to clerical errors.
Abbeydale Road turns into Abbeydale Road South, itself turning into Baslow Road: wow omg.

The sign at the bottom of Church Street as you come down into Oughtibridge from Worral says "Wharncliffe Side" and "Grenoside Side". Did someone get over-enthusiastic with the Sides, or have I been missing something..?
